My dog is bleeding and scared after her rabies shot. What's wrong?

Bleeding from the vulva is normal in intact female dogs during their heat cycle. But if Riley isn't currently in heat, or if the amount of blood you're seeing is more than normal for her, then I would be concerned that something else may be going on. Bleeding from this area can be caused by bladder stones, infections, a bleeding disorder of some kind, or even a vaginal tumor. It would be best to have Riley examined by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is causing the bleeding and get her started on appropriate treatment.

I think she should be rechecked. It sounds like she had an open pyometra or uterine infection. While the discharge could still be normal it's also possible that she needs antibiotics for a bit longer. Sometimes the injections and antibiotics do not completely clear the infection and surgery is necessary.

If she vomited 6 times last night than you need to call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to see your dog again today for a recheck. She might need subcutaneous fluids again and/or an anti-vomiting medications. Hope our dog feels better soon!

Most dogs typically go into heat twice a year. The questions to ask yourself are: 1. Has she ever done this before? 2. Does the blood look different? 3. Is she behaving differently? Occasionally, bitches do slow their bleeding and then start up again briefly towards the end, but it is not worth the risk to assume this is the case here. Pyometra is common in older, intact female dogs that have recently had a heat cycle. It is a very serious condition that typically requires surgical intervention. Please bring her to your veterinarian or the nearest veterinary ER to be on the safe side. Bleeding from the vulva in a spayed dog is not normal. Possible causes include bleeding from the urinary tract (UTI, urinary bladder stones, tumor) or bleeding from the vaginal vault (tumor or infection). Some bleeding/clotting disorders can also be causing the blood you see. I would recommend that Isabella be checked out by a veterinarian. After a thorough physical and vaginal exam, your vet may recommend bloodwork, clotting times, x-rays, or ultrasound.

I'm so sorry to hear the Arya is not doing well. The most common side effects that we see after vaccination are sore soreness and lethargy. It sounds like Arya had a more severe reaction than that. It is not normal for a dog to bleeding from her vagina after being spayed. She could have an infection of the uterine remnants, or she could have a bladder infection called cystitis that causes blood in urine and can look like vaginal discharge. I would take Eilie into the vet right away. The vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, and possibly x-rays to diagnose what is causing her to bleed from her vagina. Once a cause is found, the vet can start treatment.
