My dog has a bleeding, oozing lump on its neck. What should I do?

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This looks likely to be a cyst, which is a benign skin growth that can rupture and exude a thick proteinaceous discharge. I recommend having Roscoe seen by a Vet, as cysts can become infected when they rupture, and Roscoe may need a course of antibiotics. Your vet can then let you know if they have any concerns about the lesion when they’re able to examine it. In the meantime, keep it clean using soapy water (Dawn dish soap works well) and soak/wipe it clean a few times daily. Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures! Many skin masses can look the same. Red dermal masses, like this one, can be benign or malignant. Some possibilities are an inflamed sebaceous adenoma, hemangioma, histiocytoma or it could be a Mast Cell Tumor. Since it showed up quickly I would have Oscar seen by your Vet. They can decide if aspirating it (sticking it with a needle and sending the slides to the lab) or removing the mass and sending it for biopsy is best. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I cannot determine what the mass is by the picture but it is definitely infected at this time. I recommend taking Chicken to the vet to diagnose the mass by sticking a needle in it and looking at the cells under the microscope. Once the mass is diagnosed a treatment plan can be made. Since it is infected the best option will likely be surgical removal. Good luck and kisses to Chicken!

I would recommend that you have Lumpy checked out by a vet. It looks like it may be infected. The hair will need to be clipped away from the mass and the wound. Even if it is benign, masses don't heal very well since they are not normal tissue, so it may need to be removed so that it stops bleeding and will not continue to be a source for infection.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Given his age, the most likely problem is something such as an infection from a penetrating foreign body. There could be something still stuck below his skin if this is the case. Other possibilities include a bot fly larva or even a tumor of some kind. I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian as soon as you can to have it checked and addressed. Hope this helps!

It may be that the mass has been injured or become infected. I would recommend to wash it with antibacterial soap daily and you can apply a topical antibiotic. I would still recommend to get Roscoe to the vet as early as you can. The doctor may recommend to have the mass removed and tested. Please post again with any future questions and I hope this helps!
