My 1-year-old Lab is bleeding from his penis. What should I do?

My biggest concern is that he could also have a bladder infection that is causing him to lick a lot and therefore also causing an infection on his penis. Without seeing him to determine exactly what is infected and whether or not the bladder is also infected, I cannot say that the cephalexin will work. I would strongly recommend to have him seen by your vet. If there is a urinary tract infection and it is left untreated, it could get much worse and even start to affect the kidneys. Your vet will be able to determine if the cephalexin you have will work or if you need something stronger. I would also put a cone collar on him to prevent him from licking it any more and causing more irritation. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better really soon!

Bacteria cause inflammation to the bladder wall and this can cause blood in the urine. I would expect to not be able to see the blood in the urine in 24-48 hours. However, sometimes blood is microscopic, so it may be there even if you can't see it. If it has been longer than 48 hours and you are still seeing blood I would talk to the veterinarian that gave Hazel the antibiotics about possible x-rays or an ultrasound to look for bladder stones. Bladder stones can cause constant inflammation to the bladder wall and the antibiotics alone won't help with the blood. If there are no stones, I would talk to the veterinarian about anti-inflammatory options to help decrease the inflammation of the bladder wall and stop the blood. He may have had trauma to his penis that has resolved. He could also still have a urinary or prostate infection or bladder stones. If you see any more blood, or if Brownie is urinating frequently or straining to urinate I would recommend seeing your veterinarian.

He could have an infection and need an antibiotic. Keep the area clean, dry, and prevent him from licking the area until you can take him to the vet. If the bleeding seems excessive or he becomes lethargic than he should be seen immediately to rule out a clotting problem. .

It's a little difficult to tell for sure, but I wonder if Charlie had a persistent penile frenulum. It is a band of tissue that runs along the underside of the penis and attaches near the tip of the penis. That will cause the penis to curve. Normally we recommend surgically cutting the frenulum. I have not had one rupture on its own. They do not typically reattach after surgically cutting them. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine it to make sure that it was a persistent penile frenulum and see if anything else needs to be done about it. In the meantime, I would recommend trying to keep Charlie from licking at it and prevent any humping. If you are unable to stop the bleeding, then he may need to be examined tonight. Good luck! If the bleeding is from a UTI, it should start to clear up within 48 hours of starting the antibiotic. If its not stopped in that period of time, he should be rechecked by your vet. He may have bladder stones or even cancer in his urinary tract, he could have injured his penis, or he could be having an issue clotting his blood properly leading to the bleeding. If the bleeding from Lucky's penis has gotten worse and/or not resolved at all you may need to bring him back to your vet for a recheck. The penis and prepuce are very vascular (meaning they have lots of blood vessels) and so can bleed easily. If the bleeding hasn't subsided at all there may be a larger vessel that is damaged that may need to be sutured closed to prevent any further bleeding. I would be sure to keep the cone on Lucky as well until you get everything figured out so he won't lick excessively down there and cause more irritation.
