My dog has a bleeding bump under his mouth with exposed skin. Is it serious?

Poor guy! Your can try this: It won’t hurt him if he licks it off. However, if it’s not improving in 5 days or so, I would recommend that you schedule a recheck with your vet. I’m worried he may need antibiotics, as he may have a deep skin infection. If it continues to be a problem , a skin biopsy may be recommended. Thanks for asking PetCoach!

If so, he will likely medication such as antibiotics to help it heal. A topical cleansing solution may be prescribed as well. In the meantime, place an E-collar on him if he is scratching his chin. This may be an abscess, a cyst or a tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

This looks like a skin mass or tumor, but it is difficult to know exactly what it might be without being able to examine it in person. I would recommend having your vet take a look. They might recommend taking a sample using a small needle, or they might recommend surgery to remove the growth, especially since it is bleeding. In your picture the blood looks like it is near Snoopy's prepuce - if Snoopy is bleeding from his penis or prepuce I would recommend seeing a veterinarian on an emergency basis.

Hi and thanks for your request. This is likely to be due to a superficial skin infection likely to be caused by bacterial infection. It is not urgent. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any).

It could be that the bump has turned into an abscess, or localised infection. Do you have any pictures that you could post ? Given the fact it does not affect him that much, if he is still well in himself , I would book him in for a check up after the week-end, sooner if becoming lethargic or not eating or even restless scratching at it.
