My puppy has a bleeding bump he keeps licking. Is it an emergency?

Oh no, poor Coby! He could have a foreign body in his paw causing the bump, bleeding, and his licking it raw. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lee! Based on your photo is appears to be either a pyoderma (skin infection) or a hot spot (superficial skin infection). Because it is getting worse quickly, make an appointment tomorrow to get your Vet to look at ti. They will likely prescribe antibiotics, something for the itch, and maybe a topical. Good luck!

Hello, and thank you for your question. This looks like it could be a lump on the skin, or a focal area of infection on the skin. It may be bleeding now because Spud has been scratching at it. I would have it assessed by a vet within the next few days to pinpoint what it is. If a lump is found, they may recommend a fine needle aspirate to find out the nature of the lump. If it is a skin infection, medication can be prescribed to treat it. In the meantime, I would suggest putting an e-collar on Spud to prevent him from further chewing or licking at the lesion. If it is on the body (not the legs) you can try putting a t-shirt over him to again protect the area from further trauma. I hope this helps, and that Spud gets better soon!

This can be related to a skin infection, growth (slightly more likely if Louie is a little older), or a bug bite. A veterinary exam can determine the definitive cause, and would be required for prescription antibiotics. In the meantime, you can carefully use an electric clipper to clear hair from the area if you feel comfortable. You can also get Louie an e-collar or “cone” to prevent him from continuing to lick the area and cause further trauma. A mild pet shampoo can also be used to keep the area clean. Has he been licking at it? Can you identify a wound on it? It may be an abscess (localized infection) under the skin, as thise can show up very quickly. You can shave the hair over the top and clean it with dilute Betadine (available at any pharmacy - use water to dilute it so it looks like tea). Put an ecollar (cone) on him to prevent him from biting or chewing on it, and make an appointment with your vet as soon as you can—but it’s not something you need to see an emergency vet for as long as it’s not seeming painful and he’s eating and acting normally. Other possible causes would be some type of tumor (though less likely with his age), or a fluid accumulation called a seroma. Your vet may Do a fine needle aspirate (poke the bump with a needle and then look at cells under the microscope) to see what it is and then know how best to treat it. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Moco! Due to his age, the appearance and the location it looks like a histiocytoma. Which is a benign mass in young dogs. They tend to resolve on their own in a few months but sometimes if they ulcerate, grow rapidly, become infected or bleed we recommend removing them. Another possibility is a mast cell tumor.
