What are these black spots on my dog's skin? Fleas, ticks, or rash?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to see the skin in your pictures but it looks like a rash or comedones. If the reddish black things on her skin flakes off or are loose, wet them on a white tissue. If they melt away to a red streak that is flea poop. Flea dips and shampoos are NOT preventatives for fleas and the fleas that hatch on the carpet will jump right back on the pet. Fleas do not lay eggs on the pet but on the carpet. Bed bugs do not live on animals. I recommend a flea preventative like oral Nexgard, Simparica, Bravecto or topical Advantix ii or the Seresto collar. If there are no live fleas or flea dirt then she likely has a secondary skin infection or rash from an allergic reaction the the fleas. I would have her seen by your Vet so she can be provided relief. Also it looks like she has a paw infection which could be from environmental or food allergies. Good luck!

The best way to determine if the dark specs are 'dirt' versus 'flea dirt' is to collect the specs on a clean white paper towel and apply hydrogen peroxide. If it turns rusty colored, it likely flea dirt. Flea eggs are very small and you are not likely to see those with the naked eye. Also, the best place to look for fleas is on the lower back and between the hind legs on your dog. If you determine that you are seeing fleas or evidence of fleas, I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about switching flea products. Hope this helps.

The dark substance appears from your photos to be sebum (skin oil) mixed with dirt, though it is difficult to say for sure without a hands-on exam. Around these lesions, I can see skin inflammation. It would be best for him to see a veterinarian, but if you're unable to take Justice to a vet, you will need to clip the hair using electric trimmers. Be careful to avoid causing skin abrasions. This will allow a better look at the lesions underneath as well as facilitate topical treatment. A good antiseptic is a spray called Vetericyn, available on Amazon.com and at some pet stores. The rust color to Max’s hair in this area is saliva staining from licking. This could still be happening from the grooming, or could be some other source of itching such as fleas, allergies, skin infection, etc. Make sure Max is on a good monthly flea preventative! The dark spots could be clogged hair follicles or flea “dirt” (aka flea poop). You can try a cleansing shampoo that will help to clear the follicles (like this one https://m.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=21564 ). If Max is still licking or additional skin things pop up in the next few days, he should be examined by a vet for a diagnosis so he can get appropriate treatment.

Poor Chalie! Black discoloration in the skin can occur as a result of chronic inflammation (from infection, fleas, allergies, etc.) or due to endocrine/metabolic conditions (such as hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease). Make sure that Chalie is receiving a high quality flea preventative (such as Nexgard, Bravecto or K9 Advantix II) regularly. You can also try bathing him in a gentle oatmeal based dog shampoo, because this can be soothing on the skin. I also recommend taking Chalie to his vet for further evaluation of his skin to determine if there are more chronic conditions that should be addressed. I hope that all goes well!

The redness and hairloss on Charlie could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by his veterinarian who may prescribe medications. Hello. Fleas would be moving, & moving very quickly, so no apparent fleas in either picture. To tell if you have flea dirt ( which is actually flea feces ), drop some of the debris on a damp paper towel. If it is flea dirt, then a reddish brown to rust color will leach from each spot.
