What is this black spot on my dog's leg? Is a black skin tag normal?

Without seeing it in person it is hard to know for sure what the growth is. It is not likely a wart. Warts are caused by viruses and often seen in the mouth of dogs. This may very well be a benign skin tag/growth, but with any lump an evaluation by your veterinarian at your earliest convenience is recommended. They may take a small needle sample and look at the cells under the microscope to get more info and make sure it is nothing to worry about. They can also discuss options for removal if it is growing or if it is bothering pogi.

Obviously I can't definitively determine the cause of Fabulous's skin lesions without examining him and taking a biopsy sample. However, looking at the pictures, some of the most likely causes of this type of lesion include papillomas, over production of keratin, or benign skin tags. It would be best to have this lesion examined by your vet. Some lesions that stick out can get caught on objects, causing the area to bleed and potentially become infected. It looks like the accessory carpal pad as it is colored like the other foot pads. Does he have one on the right front leg too? If so, that is normal, all dogs have those. If there is not one on the other side then you need to take him to the vet for an exam so they can tell you if it's skin tag or a tumor of some kind. It does not look like a skin tag to me. However, the fact that the area is bald suggests that Tripp has been scratching or biting on it. Please, monitor the area for a few days. If you notice that the tag is getting bigger or if it is bothering Tripp, you should get him checked by your local vets. In that case, surgical removal of the wart may be necessary.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It always COULD be cancer - the only way to diagnose for sure is to remove it and send it to the lab. But I doubt it based on its current appearance. FAR more likely is that it’s a completely harmless “skin tag”. I’m not surprised at the color; even though her fur is fawn, you can see that Gracie’s actual skin is blackish in that area. Keep an eye on it. If it becomes suddenly big, hard, or seems to bother Gracie, get it checked out. Best of luck to you and Gracie!

But just in general a skin mass could be benign (skin tag, etc) or malignant. Unfortunately without some sort of sampling (cytology or biopsy to collect cells) there is not a way to know for sure based on appearance. Small size, no growth, lack of ulceration, and freely moveable nature are certainly favorable characteristics. Yes, this may just be a benign growth like a skin tag, but I cannot make a definitive diagnosis without seeing him in person. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. I hope this helps!
