My dog has blackish-brown specks after bath, not fleas. What is it?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 70 lbs

Emily has blackish brown specks all over her even after she was bathed. The specks don't turn red when wet, I didn't find any fleas, and she isn't scratching more than usual. What could it be?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a skin infection. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!
