Why is my dog biting legs, scratching, shaking, and uncomfortable?

Poor Alfie! I see he's a toy breed dog, and they can be prone to a condition called a luxating patella. This is when the kneecap moves out of it's correct anatomical position, causing sudden lameness. It could also be that he strained a ligament or muscle. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. It’s possible his anal glands are full/uncomfortable. If they are bulging on either side of his anus when you palapate from the outside, then that definitely could be the case. I recommend bringing him to your vet for a rectal exam/anal gland expression and to check his ears. He likely will need and ear cleaner and a steroid/antibiotic/antifungal/antiyeast ointment such as otomax/kometamax/posatex if he has an ear infection. A few days of an allergy medication called Apoquel may help as well. Good luck!

If he seems weak in his rear legs it is possible that he has a spinal injury or some kind of trauma. I don't think that itching would be related however - it's also possible that he has fleas or another skin condition and that the itching is what is making him walk abnormally. I'd recommend having a vet examine him to determine what is going on.

If the diet does not stop the itching after 12 weeks (assuming you are doing a proper diet trial), it's not likely a food allergy and you should look into thyroid disease or environmental allergies. The tuffed hair is interesting and the fact that he is restless. I would be suspicious of fleas, skin mites or perhaps allergies causing him to be itchy and that's why he won;t settle down.
