Why is my dog biting his hindquarters and whimpering after neuter?

It sounds like Milo could be very itchy, which is causing him to gnaw on his back. In order to keep him from going at himself, the cause of the itchiness needs to be diagnosed. It could be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If he isn't up to date on his flea treatment, I can give you one for him. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. If he is up to date on his flea treatment, I recommend taking him into the vet for an exam today or tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment. Keep the cone on him until you can get him in to see the vet. You can also try an oatmeal bath to see if that temporarily relieves his discomfort. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Hello, sorry to hear about Bentley. Its unusual for ants to be around the area, I would actually be more concerned that what you are seeing in the area are fleas. They may look similar to ants. Fleas can indeed causes severe anxiety and itchiness which can also alter Bentley's attitude and temperament. Make sure that Bentley has adequate monthly flea control and see if this resolves his issues. Otherwise, if you are convinced that ants are bothering him, you may need to call pest control to have your home treated. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Given that you have recently moved to a new place, it is possible that this is due to allergies and unless addressed, this will continue to happen. In the meantime, you can bathe him with a medicated shampoo you may obtain from your local pet store containing chlorehexidine which may help improve a superficial mild infection. You can do this twice weekly. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Ouch, poor Bobby's skin looks so irritated! If you are sure he doesn't have fleas, then other causes of this incessant bleeding include allergies, mites, or ringworm. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what is causing this itching, but he should see a vet for it in the morning. The vet can diagnose the cause of his itching so he can be treated. I would also be concerned he has a secondary bacterial infection due to the trauma to his skin, and that needs to be treated as well by the vet.

Two causes come to mind: 1) Hachi picked up fleas at the groomers and now they are congregating in the tail area and are biting him. Check the base of the tail for fleas and fea dirt and use a flea preventive regularly. 2) Unfortunately many groomers think they know how to empty anal glands and when it is to be done (even when there is no need to!) and do it wrongly, squeezing hard from the outside. THis often bruises the anal sacs and the area around them and starts to get inflamed and hurts. If you can rule out fleas, I suggest you take Hachi to your vet for an exam of the anal glands. He may need an antiinflammatory to resolve the irritation and possible pain.

It could be possible that Jett may have a problem with his anal glands, or another skin issue which is causing his irritation. I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have him examined fully. Your veterinarian will then be able to suggest an appropriate course of treatment which may include antiinflammatories and antibiotics, particularly if he has broken the skin barrier.
