My dog is biting his butt raw after flea treatment. What's wrong?

I recommend you get him checked by your vet - it is likely the damaged skin has become infected and very painful, hence the biting and snapping towards the area. It is likely he will need antibacterial and antifungal washes and possibly antiinflammatory medication to allow the skin to heal. An omega fatty acid supplement and rigorous flea prevention (including household flea spray to kill the eggs and larvae) are also recommended

There is a possibility that he is irritated from flea bites at his tail and/or from the spot on. It is a well-known side effect that spot-ons can cause an itch, hair loss, irritation, but usually that irritation is gone within a few hours. Do not let him bite or lick or scratch the application location. You can put a loose t-shirt on him covering up the location or put on an e-collar. If the irritation has not subsided by tomorrow, or if Boy boy develops a wound , he will need to be seen by a veterinarian for an exam. In the meantime do not put cream or ointment onto the location where you applied the flea treatment.

Hi there. Jack may be suffering from allergies. Allergies can be due to food and environmental allergens, so he does not have to be infested with fleas to be itchy. He could also be having problems with his anal glands or biting at himself because of pain. I recommend taking him to the veterinarian so he can get a full check up. The vet will probably be able to give you some medications or recommendations to help Jack feel better. Hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear about Jake. I would be concerned he could have either intense itching or pain near his hind end that is causing this behavior. The base of the tail/hind end is a common site for flea bites. I would recommend a visit to the vet for an examination. They can check for fleas and skin infection (some dogs will get a skin infection secondary to flea allergy). They can also check for pain and neurological abnormalities that may cause these signs.

I'm sorry to hear that Jax is so uncomfortable! The redness and inflammation on his foot is pretty significant. This type of skin issue is most commonly caused by underlying allergies to fleas, food or the environment. When dogs itch and bite a lot, they damage the protective outer layers of the skin, often resulting in the onset of bacterial and/or yeast skin infections. It's possible that he may need some anti-itch medications, antibiotics or anti-fungal medications. I understand that Jax is not the most cooperative at the vet, but this is something that warrants veterinary attention. I'd recommend calling your vet to ask if they can prescribe a sedative before the appointment or consider working with a house call vet in your area. I hope that everything goes well!

This would be the most common area for flea allergies to manifest themselves. With flea allergies, all it takes is one bite from a flea to send the whole body into an itch cycle. Sentry Plus is a generic form of Frontline, which doesn't seem to work as well as some of the newer, prescription flea preventatives. I would recommend that you have the dogs evaluated by the vet to determine if it is flea allergies, or something else like food allergies, mites, or a bacterial infection. Looks like your little lady is giving herself some hot spots there. If there is a hot spot forming under the hair then the best thing to do is to remove the hair and cleanse the area with an antibacterial solution. Some dogs require topical and/or oral antibiotics and other dogs benefit from some steroids to stop the itch. Most hot spots are secondary to underlying allergies (inhaled/environmental, food, or flea). If seasonal environmental is most likely. The best way to help her would be to see your family vet to have the areas addressed topically and so that medications can be prescribed to treat any infection and stop the itch.
