My husky bites his tail. What are yellow flakes and dark spots?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to see Riku is having problems. Without better pictures I would initially guess that fleas are the problem. They typically cause skin problems of the tail, rear end, and up the back. It may be that Riku is allergic to flea bites and sometimes we don't even find a flea on the pet. I would advise seeing your vet and having them work through this case. They can assess a good diagnostic/treatment plan based on physical exam findings and history. Some of the areas look moist or starting to get infected. Your vet will direct the appropriate treatment plan. Good luck Riku!

Poor Kato! I'm sorry to hear that he's having this problem. Focal spots of redness, hair loss, itching, and scabs are often called "hot spots" - these are usually caused by a bacterial skin infection, and are often related to an underlying allergy problem. In my experience, oral medications (usually a steroid and antibiotic) are usually needed to get these to clear up - so if your veterinarian hasn't given you anything like this, I would suggest calling or taking Kato back in for a recheck to talk about starting some additional meds. In a dog this age, it's also possible that he may have an underlying hormonal problem like hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease that is contributing to his skin issues, so you may also want to talk to your veterinarian about possibly testing for these problems.

That is a rash on Troy. Rashes can develop for many reasons and common causes include fleas, environmental allergies or food allergies. You need to keep Troy from biting at the area as this will make it worse. Make him wear an elizabethan collar any time you are not directly watching him. You can also apply a dab of coconut oil to the area twice daily. Rub it in well and do not allow him to lick it as this may cause his stomach to get upset. Make sure to treat him for fleas as this will eliminate it as a cause. I recommend the tops products such as Nexgard or Simparica. Its possible this is a skin infection versus the typical lesions Pheobe gets with her allergies. It could be related to her allergies (they can get worse over time) but they can also be more common in thick coated breeds like huskies. I recommend to call your veterinarian. They may want to examine her again or they may recommend a medicated shampoo or other topical therapy. Then again, since she has thick hair, they may also recommend systemic medications. Ask your vet about any additional supplements, diet changes or antihistamines which may also help. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat Koda with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advantage), then get him to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start him on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting him on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).

Those spots on Pedro could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications. Itching on the hind end is most often due to fleas. Check that the tick product you used on Prince covers fleas as well. Also make sure that the product you use will kill fleas at every stage in their life cycle - not just the adult fleas. Keep applying the topical medications prescribed by your veterinarian in case there is a skin infection. If this does not resolve the issue you should go back to your vet for further diagnostics. Since some metabolic diseases can cause hair loss, your vet will want to do blood work as the next step. Allergies can also cause itching and skin infections so speak with your vet about anti-allergy medications.
