Why does my dog bite his penis after peeing? Is he itching or in pain?

Causes of licking the prepuce/penis area could be a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine, stones in the urinary tract, or trauma to the area. It is important that you make an appointment to have Mako seen by your veterinarian as soon as you can to help determine the cause of his behaviour and to start treatment. If you notice him straining to urinate/unable to produce urine, this is a medical emergency and he should be seen by a vet immediately. I recommend you put an e-collar (cone) on him to help prevent him from biting/licking at the area as this may help reduce the risk of infection

Bleeding from the penis indicates a serious problem. In an unneutered dog, it could be a prostate infection, enlargement, or tumor. Some other possibilities include a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, or a systemic bleeding problem (coagulopathy). I suspect that his paw biting is unrelated and may be due to allergies or a hot spot, but he should definitely be seen by a veterinarian to determine the cause of both issues and come up with a good treatment plan. I am so sorry to hear about Prince. It sounds like he needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Possible causes for the bleeding from the penis include bladder stones, infection or inflammation of the bladder or prostate, tumor of the prostate or bladder, wound on the penis or problem with the urethra, and bleeding disorders. Your dog needs a good physical exam to start off- the vet can palpate the prostate and bladder and check the penis for problems. They then may recommend a urine test and an x-ray or ultrasound to check the bladder and prostate. They can then get more information on these episodes you are describing, as well as listen to his heart and lungs to be sure these spells he is having aren't fainting/weakness related to a heart issue. They can also x-ray his stomach and do bloodwork to check for underlying causes for his vomiting. It sounds like he is quite ill so I would get him in to the vet right away. There are many reasons Prince could have the rash including parasites or allergies (both environmental and food). If you don’t see any fleas, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t a problem. They can have issues with only 1 or 2 fleas running around. Make sure to keep him from licking the area by making him wear an Elizabethan collar at all times if needed. Go ahead and treat him for fleas once a month for at least 2 months. If you want an over the counter product, pick Frontline but there are better products out there like Cheristan or Comfortis. You don’t necessarily need to do anything about the rash as long as it doesn’t get worse. If you want however, you can wash the area daily with hand soap and rinse it wel. If he does not get better within a couple weeks or if he gets worse, take him in to see the veterinarian. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any further questions.!

Most dogs do not like to be petted under their belly or groin - this is a vulnerable place which is instinctively protected by a natural reflex. I would be concerned he is licking because the tip is constantly exposed and irritated - a full vet check to assess for underlying injury or complications is recommended and surgical repair may be necessary to prevent further self trauma and injury. I recommend you take a fresh urine sample with you to rule out UTI also

It sounds like he may have either hurt his penis or he cannot pee. If he keeps licking it and or acts like it hurts, you should have a vet examine the penis. Unfortunately only a hands-on exam will reveal what is wrong.
