My dog bites my child after moving. What can I do to help him?

Because you cannot teach an eighteen-month-old how to respond to the puppy in such a way as to minimize the possibility of another incident, there is a reason to believe it could happen again. I would return the puppy to the breeder if you can, explaining the reason why. Perhaps Buzz is just not suitable for a home with small children. There is such a thing as temperament testing, which can be done through your local kennel club. Though not foolproof, this can give you some idea how a puppy will react in a variety of circumstances. This may not be the breed mix for you, or it may be that you simply need to go to another source for your puppy. I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and Micah in person to really take care of this behavior. The sooner these behaviors are dealt with, the more likely it is that you can improve and resolve them. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This is a very dangerous situation, having an very large, & aggressive dog around children. Buspirone is a non-benzodiazepine anxiolytic agent used in dogs, but it may take a week or more to be effective; it is not appropriate for acute treatment of situational anxieties. I would never just depend on a medication to address this type of phobia where someone can be seriously hurt. Training, conditioning, muzzles must all be incorporated, along with an appropriate medication to try & manage Truman. You need the help of your veterinarian & a trainer or behavioral specialist if you want to socialize Truman & make him more comfortable & confident around children. I hope this helps. Take care.

Tanyet mauled you over a resource he wanted and he has the likelihood of doing it again with something else highly valued. I know you love him so I suggest hiring a private trainer or a Veterinary Behaviorist to work with you and Tanyet. I would have him crated or locked in a separate room when the children are home and up. If this fails then I would rehome him to a house with out children I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

If Chewbacca is still active and drinking and not having vomiting or diarrhea, I would give him more time. Movin can be stressful and it isn't necessary for dogs to eat every day. I know you want him to eat but he may need to acclimate to the new place before he decides to eat. If he is acting ill, I recommend taking him to a vet to make sure nothing else is going on. I would also visit PetCo for Adaptil, a pheromone to help calm pets in stressful situtation. Talk to your vet about other behavior supplements like Composure or Zylkene. I hope this helps. I recommend taking Rosie to your vet to discuss behavior training. There is a lot you and your family can do to prevent it getting worse but you may need to talk with a specialist. It is important to first see a veterinarian to rule out medical causes, and to see if medical therapy is indicated for Charlie’s behaviour if she has bitten people before. It is also very important to seek the advice of a dog trainer who uses positive reinforcement techniques, or a veterinary behaviorist, to help curb this behavior. Without training Charlie may indeed cause seruious harm to your boyfriend’s niece or other children. Hopefully she will improve with training and learn what is and is not acceptable behaviour. I would advise keeping her away from children until you have the chance to work with a trainer or behaviourist, and as with any dog, do not leave her unattended around children even after training.
