My GSD has a neck lump after a dog bite. Is it serious or an abscess?

At one year of age, it is unlikely that these masses on Gunner are cancerous. If these masses are on either side of his neck, then they might be his lymph nodes, which would become enlarged when he is ill or suffering from an infection. They could also be cysts, abscesses, or benign tumors. I would take Gunner into the vet in the morning to have these masses examined. If these masses are not lymph nodes, the vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform.

Poor Sasha! If you have another dog that plays rough with her and bites at the neck, it could be that a bite broke the skin and has now caused an abscess. A dog's mouth has a lot of bacteria in it, and dog bites can lead to abscesses. I would keep the collar off of her, and have her seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose if she does have an abscess. Should she have one, it will need to be drained and flushed sterilely, and she will need antibiotics to treat the infection. Abscesses are painful and that would cause her to act differently, so it's best to get her into a vet as soon as possible, especially since the lump is getting bigger. Good luck, I hope this helps!

It could be that Tank has an abscess. This commonly occur after animal bites and are very painful to the dog. He does need to see a vet tomorrow, as if he does have an abscess, it will need to be drained and flushed, and he will need antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

I'd keep an eye on the bump for now. If it doesn't go away, gets bigger, or Lily starts showings signs of tick borne disease like lethargy and limping, have her seen by a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

It sounds like Maya may have an abscess, which is a localized pocket of infection. This needs to be flushed sterilely, and she will need antibiotics to treat it if she does have an abscess. I would have her seen by a vet today to treat this wound.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There are many reasons for a growth to show up rather suddenly. This could be an abscess from a bite or puncture wound, an infected salivary gland, an infected tooth, or an enlarged lymph node either from an infection, or something more serious like lymphoma. We do see benign, fatty tumors ( lipomas ) in this region, but she is pretty young for this to occur. I would have this evaluated as soon as possible. Hopefully it will not turn out to be too serious, but Athena should be looked at soon. I hope all is well soon. Take care.

Unfortunately the color on the picture is quite distorted. However if appears to be a possible abscess (infected pocket caused by trauma to the skin) or a large inflammatory response to a bug bite (spider perhaps). It is large however and looks irritated so I would recommend having your vet examine this area closely. Jasmine will likely need some medicaitons to get this to resolve well. Poor girl.
