What's the right Benadryl dosage for my dog's fireworks anxiety?

Melatonin is more to help with sleep and benadryl is an antihistamine that potentially makes the pet drowsy. Of the 2 I would chose benadryl but I personally recommend discussing Lilly's issues with your Vet. They can prescribe drugs that will actually work to sedate Lilly. Drugs like Trazadone, Xanax, and Sileo can work very well. I wish Lilly the best!

There are a number of medications that can help with separation anxiety, but we never know how a dog is going to react to a medication until we try it. Sometimes we will use prescription anti-anxiety medications because an over the counter medication like Benadryl does not work. And some dogs get hyper on Benadryl instead of sedated, so you always need to try it first. You can definitely try a Benadryl before the vet visit but if the problem is this pronounced, I would talk to your vet about stronger medication at home. They make several medicines such a trazadone, diazepam, or gabapentin that are now being used prior to anxiety such as vet visits and fireworks that can help. You can also use a white noise machine at home during storms and fireworks as this can help mask the noises to ease her

I personally prefer Trazodone which your daughter could get from your veterinarian as long as they think this is a good idea for Rocky as they know his medical history. I use this for a lot of my patients that have to spend the day in the hospital and they are a bit anxious. Works very well. Benadryl may help though usually the effects are so transient that it may not achieve the desirable effects. Best of luck!
