My old chihuahua has a belly sore. When should I worry about it?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Female | spayed | 10 years and 8 months old | 13 lbs

I’m worried about this recent sore on my 11-year old chihuahua’s belly. We recently moved to a forested area where she goes to the restroom at. All the vets in the area are booked months out.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Luna and for providing a picture, it's very helpful! It looks like this sore is scabbed over, which means it's healing. In the picture, it looks a bit pink around the area, but I don't see any signs of infection. At this point in time, I recommend just observing it for now. I don't think it requires a vet visit. Keep an eye on her when she goes outside to potty, and check the area daily. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus then it's infected and she needs to see the vet. I hope this helps!

I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have them evaluate it since it may require antibiotics. Without seeing it though I cannot say for sure. Most likely Pixie will need a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents to fully recover. My 4-day-old puppy has a sore on his belly. What should I do?

Puppies!!! This sore could be several things - urine scald and another puppy suckling this spot are likely. Watch the puppies closely to see if another pup is suckling or if mom is excessively licking this spot. Right now, you can use some topical triple antibiotic ointment (a small amount) a couple times a day. If it gets any bigger or deeper, seek veterinary care. Thank you for using pet coach.

Why does my dog have a big red sore on his stomach near his nipple?

It is concerning that the sore is so red, as this may be a sign of an infection or a tumor. I recommend having Ashton looked at by a vet soon, especially if the area is bothering Ashton, or bleeding/having discharge. Your vet can take small samples from the skin to determine exactly what is going on. I hope this helps!

My senior dog has a skin infection on her belly. What's causing it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a focal infection though an examination is needed to know. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It may be the picture but I am concerned that there may be also a lump as well. If that is the case, that should be evaluated to know if it is actually a growth. Good luck and have a good night!

My 5-month-old bulldog has a red sore on his underbelly. What is it?

Make sure that this is not from urine getting into that part of the skin and if it is, have him evaluated by a veterinarian. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks.
