My dog is barking for hours and agitated, even indoors. What's wrong?

Hello, Duke may be hearing or sensing something that could be causing him to be alarmed. If nothing, then make sure Duke did not get into any medications at home that could alter his mentation. If this does not change and he continue to show this behavior then have Duke evaluated by a veterinarian soon. I would have Duke evaluated tonight if his behavioral changes worsen or if you note any other signs including weakness, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, or worsening aggression. That would be very annoying for you! It could be that he is bored, something has frightened him, he could be lonely, or he could be hearing something you cannot (dogs have better hearing than humans). If he doesn't sleep in your room with you, you can try bringing him in with you, and he could sleep next to the bed. If that's not an option, you can give him a toy to play with, or one that is a puzzle toy he has to solve in order to get a treat. You can try doing a big walk with him before bed to tire him out, which will help him sleep through the night.

I suspect that he does have a reason, even if you can't tell what it is :) Dogs have much better hearing than we do, so he may hear something outside that is upsetting him that you aren't able to hear. I would suggest using a white noise machine or something similar to help block any sounds from outside that may be upsetting him.

As a general rule, dogs will be able to smell and hear much better than we can at all times, and at night, they can see much better because of the way their eyes are made. Consequently, it is likely either a person (could be pretty far off) or, more likely, a wild animal is entering Rusty's field of senses in one way or another. The challenging part, once you know what he is barking at, will be to redirect his attention because, to him, he is protecting his pack/territory. This carries a strong instinct-driven behavior that requires a lot of time and diligence to correct if you want him to stop. I would encourage you to make sure of what he is focusing on if you can, then try to desensitize him to whatever that is. Hope this helps!

At his age, it could be a degree of canine cognitive dysfunction (senility). You would need to have Chewy examined by your veterinarian for confirmation. Leo is old enough to be a teenager now and hormonal. Neutering him may help because intact males are more prone to roaming to look for mates. Although we can't be sure, this may be his reason to not want to come home. When you get up and walk him when he barks, you are rewarding his behavior and so he will keep doing it. Ignore him, correct him or distract him. Not allowing him to sleep all day and instead of walking, try something more vigorous like a game of fetch to tire him out. It's possible there is something she is hearing, such as a rodent in the walls, neighbor, etc that is causing her to fixate on the spot. Trying to distract her with a treat or toy, or even soothing TV show may help. If she continues to fixate and a cause can't be found, seems in distress or pain, has other symptoms of illness appear, or doesn't settle down, having a vet checkup to rule out any health issues is always a good idea.
