My dog barked wildly after eating. Could this stress cause bloat?

This is probably still related to the kennel cough, it can take up to 3 weeks to resolve completely. A bloat is indeed a possibility, but it is not that common, it usually happens after a big meal, too much exercise/jumping or after drinking a lot. If you have a small dog it's not really a concern either.

She may have had a bit of a gassed up stomach, which resolved by itself. She would likely not have slept through the night and would have been pacing. She would also not have felt happy enough to play ball today. I would watch her closely, and if you see her abdomen swell (sounds like a drum!) or if she starts panting and pacing, then she needs to be taken to a PetER right away as this would be an emergency.

There are actually no studies that cite drinking water after exercise as a cause of bloat. Star's chances of developing bloat at this point are unchanged. There are a lot of unknowns regarding the exact causation of bloat in dogs and research is ongoing. Don't worry! :-)

Yes with large breed dogs that eat a large meal and run around afterwards they think that does contributes to bloat which can quickly become life threatening. I would confine your dog while eating in the house for a half hour or so, or take him for a leash walk after eating so he gets rid of some energy in a controlled fashion. Small breed dogs don't get bloat. Bloat is a large breed deep chested dog disease, so you have nothing to worry about there. Also symptoms of bloat include vomiting (food and water), severe pain and agony in a lateral position. Niko likely has some indigestion and has from eating too much food in such a short amount time. Allow his stomach to settle by skipping his next meal and then you can feed him an easily digestible meal such as plain boiled chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days until he gets back to his normal self. I would recommend that you have Bella examined by a vet. While stress at home can certainly cause problems, it does not often cause bloating in dogs. Bloating could be a sign of a serious medical condition, such as fluid building up in the abdomen, organ enlargement, excess gas in the intestines, etc. A vet will do a thorough examination and may recommend diagnostic testing, such as blood work or x-rays to determine the problem.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A light walk probably won't hurt but yes you are right about Bloat. It's very serious and any exercise after eating can be a problem. But it's usually vigorous activity like running, playing, fetching. Light walks should not be a problem and I don't see that as a big risk factor. Lots of owners do the same thing that you did. Also don't let her drink a big bowl of water around the time of vigorous activity. Small sips are ok but not huge gulps of water. So it's good to be careful and vigilant. The signs of Bloat include dry heaves (trying to vomit but nothing comes up), restlessness, not able to get comfortable, crying or moaning in discomfort, pacing, not wanting to lay down. I think you did the right thing walking her and I like the fact that you are aware of Bloat. Good job educating yourself on this important topic.
