My dog has a bald spot on his head with black spots. What to do?

Hi. This looks like a hot spot, which is a skin infection. Usually associated with allergies. It needs an exam, antibiotics and a.clip and clean. Also possibly anti-inflammatory. Give your veterinarian a call

I am sorry to hear about Tyson! A hot spot is definitely a possibility for a lesion like this. It is hard to tell in the photo, but if the lesion is raised from the skin we also worry about skin tumors/growths. You can try cleaning the area with mild soap Or hibiclens (available at drug stores) and applying a topical hydrocortisone but you will need to put an e-collar on Tyson to prevent him from licking the area. If it is a hot spot we often need a short course of steroids and antibiotics as well. If it is getting larger or he is really bothering at it, I would try to get him into your vet sooner.

Those spots on Tank could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get), endocrine disease or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with a medicated dog shampoo every other day and rinse well. Protect the areas from licking or scratching. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by his veterinarian who may prescribe medications or diagnostics. Bear's skin lesion looks most suspicious for a hot spot (acute moist dermatitis), but could be related to ringworm, mange or a skin infection from underlying allergies. You can try carefully using clippers to clip the hair around these lesions, then cleaning them regularly with an antiseptic chlorhexidine solution (this shampoo is one example: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=27982) and rinse/dry well. If Bear is scratching or rubbing at these lesions at all, be sure to keep an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further skin damage. They look a bit like hotspots. I would recommend having Roscoe examined by a vet to see what is going on, and more importantly, what may be causing it. It could be allergies, fleas, or an ear infection.
