Why does my spayed female dog have a bad odor from her rear end?

Can you isolate where the smell is coming from? If it is coming and going every 2 months, I would wonder if she is having problems with her anal glands. If the smell appears to be coming from her skin, it is possible that it is from the bacteria or yeast on her skin. If the smell comes and goes, then it is most likely from the anal glands. Dogs have scent glands on either side of the anus that release a stinky liquid that commonly smells fishy. If she is scooting or licking excessively, then I would have your veterinarian check her anal glands to make sure that they are not overly full. However if the smell is coming from her urine, then I would be worried that she has a urinary tract infection and would recommend having your veterinarian examine a urine sample. Good luck! Poor Maggie. There is a good chance this is the discharge from her anal glands. Dogs has 2 glands, one on each side just inside of their anus, that usually naturally express when they have bowel movements. Unfortunately, some dogs do not always express these and they will get full. Then they will accidentally express them by scooting their booty, licking back there, when they get frightened, or just because they get too full. I would have your vet’s office try to express her anal glands and you may need to give her a bath to see if that gets rid of the smell. Some dogs need regular expressing every 4-8 weeks. Most vet clinic do this for a small charge or even for free. You can also have your vet show you how to do it at home but I must warn you, it is a nasty job. :) I hope this helps!

Hello, my name is Dr. Shines and I agree this is concerning. I suspect Pacha has an infection either in her vaginal canal or in her bladder. Some vaginal discharge is normal but the odor and increase in leakage is not. I recommend to make an appointment this week to have Pacha examined. The veterinarian will likely test a urine sample to determine if that the source of infection. Antibiotic selection will depend on the source of the infection. If it is vaginitis, she may get an antibiotic and a probiotic. One other thought, you may also ask the veterinarian to check her anal glands. Anal gland excretions are a VERY common cause of bad smell from the back end of pet. Sometimes the glands are infected but sometimes they are just full and benefit from being expressed. I bet you are smelling anal sac/gland fluid. They are scent glands dogs have just inside there rectum. They are supposed to express a small amount every time they defecate, but sometimes they will leak if they get startled, or bark forcefully. If this is an occasional problem it is normal. If she is scooting or licking her rear end or otherwise acting uncomfortable then she should be evaluated by your veterinarian to make sure she doesn’t have an infection. Cats have two small scent glands on either side of their rectum called anal glands - if these glands have been leaking a little or if she has expressed them recently, you may notice a very strong odor from her rear end. You can try cleaning the area around her rectum with some warm water and soap to help get rid of the smell. If this is a recurring problem, I recommend having her seen by a vet to check for infection or impaction of the glands.

Dogs don't sweat through their skin, only their paw pads - so if Mollie has a persistent odor, this is likely due to some other problem such as a bacterial or fungal skin infection, impacted anal glands, an ear infection, or some other issue. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam to determine what is causing the odor. He/she should be able to prescribe a medicated shampoo or other treatment for the underlying problem, depending on what is found.
