What causes my dog's bad breath and how can I prevent heartworm?

It's odd that it improved when the [Giardia](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/giardia/) was treated. My first suspicion for the ongoing odor is that she may be licking at her anal glands or eating her own (or someone else's) poop. Ideally, have her examined by a veterinarian just to make sure there are no wounds, irritation, etc in her mouth or throat that maybe contributing. You r vet can also check her anal glands to see if they seem full or irritated which could lead t her having a tendency to lick at them a lot. If her anal glands are fine, and her mouth is fine, use a daily product for dental health. [CET products](https://us.virbac.com/cet-veggiedent-fr3sh-dental-chew-for-dogs) contain chlorhexadine which kills bad breath causing bacteria. I certainly understand how difficult it can be to manage bad breath. After a dental cleaning, continuing to brush is very important. Dogs with bad breath usually have terrible teeth...ie their teeth are full of tartar which harbors gas producing bacteria and that stinks. These bacteria also cause severe gingivitis (inflamed gums) which allows the bacteria to enter the blood stream and eventually cause heart and kidney problems. Another reason for bad breath could be a tooth root abscess, a wound in the oral cavity and renal failure. Please take Voodoo to a veterinarian for an exam to find the cause of the bad breath. Treatment can then be initiated, ie a dental cleaning, antibiotics to kill those bacteria and/or early detection of renal failure.

At this age she most likely has bad breath due to Halle ptosis which is an accumulation of bacteria on the back of her tongue or the beginning stages of dental disease. You want to tackle this by brushing her teeth every day with a pet formulated toothpaste and toothbrush which you can find at your local pet store. You can also do oral rinses with a pet formulated rents also located at your pet store. If the bad breath continues then it is a good idea to have your veterinarian do a complete oral exam to make sure there are no other concerns that need to be addressed. I hope this helps!

Bella is a cutie! It's unusual for the breath to already be smelling bad so soon after a dental. I recommend to have her examined by her vet to make sure the extraction sites are healed normally. Always better to be safe than sorry! If everything checks out normally, start brushing her teeth daily. Use a dog toothpaste. This will help to decrease the bacterial load in the mouth which is often responsible for bad smells. It will also improve her over-all dental health! She should still continue getting her teeth professionally cleaned by the vet about once a year even with daily brushing. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. 

There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. 

 The best flea, tick and mosquito preventative is canine advantix in my opinion. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). 

If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests.

 Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
 The best way to go about treating her bad breath would be by treating his underlying dental disease which your veterinarian can start by doing a thorough dental cleaning.

Bad breath is an indiction of a dental problem, and that will require a visit to the vet to diagnose and treat. It sounds like Shiro may have ticks as well, and you will need a flea and tick medication for him to keep ticks from continuing to bite him and potentially infect him with deadly diseases.
