My young dog has bad breath. Could a broken tooth be the problem?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 30 lbs

My dog has had bad breath for about 2 weeks, we've tried brushing multiple times, dental chews, etc to no avail. Upon inspecting her mouth while brushing today we saw the attached photo which looks like she may have broken a tooth. She's only 2 and had a well checkup including teeth just this August. Does this seem like a broken tooth issue or are we off mark?

I'm not sure from the photo whether this is a slab fracture of the large premolar or if it is a retained deciduous or baby tooth. It should be looked at by your veterinarian to determine if Charlie needs sedation and dental work. If it is either a fractured tooth or a baby tooth, it needs to be worked on.
