My dachshund's breath is terrible after tooth surgery. Is it infected?

These are all signs of a pretty severe dental disease and infection. Pus in the mouth and foul odor are usually the tell-tale signs. I would suggest getting financial assistance b/c this can be a huge undertaking to get a pets teeth cleaned and diseased teeth extracted, but this is the only way to correct it once the teeth are this far gone. Hi Dorian, You really need to get Susie back to the vet. Did they check her teeth carefully when you had her in last time? Usually bad breath is associated with dental disease and Dachshund's are notorious for having bad teeth. You are probably feeling an enlarged lymph node. This can be serious. It may be enlarged from the bacteria in her mouth but it could also be something worse like lymphoma (cancer). There are many vet clinics these days that offer low cost services. I suggest you try to contact one of them to see what assistance they can give you. It would be best to have a veterinarian do an exam on him. It’s possible he may have a wound on the roof of his mouth or back of his throat, or a piece of grass or a small twig stuck on a back tooth, etc, or a wound elsewhere in his mouth. It’s also possible that he’s having some tooth root problems with the recent eruption of adult teeth. If he is eating fine and otherwise acting normally, it’s ok to try brushing his teeth and try a rinse or water additive designed for halitosis (bad breath) in dogs. Yes, that is a common presentation with a molar tooth infection. The tooth will need to be extracted and they will put Tootsie in antibiotics for the infection. Blood work is usually done before anesthesia and they will scale and polish the teeth and check the rest to make sure they are healthy. Once the mouth is healed then you can start brushing her teeth or using another dental product. They may also put Tootsie on pain medication. Poor Minnie. The black tooth is likely infected and the red gums indicate periodontal disease. She needs to go to your vet for a mouth exam and likely will need to have this area cleaned well and potentially have to have the tooth extracted. The vet may recommend dental x-rays for optimal care. Until you can get her in you can rinse her mouth with pet formulated mouth wash to help with the odor and cut down in the infection. Sometimes the only way to truly lessen the bad breath is by taking Suki to get a professional dental cleaning at a veterinary hospital where the adhered calculus can be removed and the teeth can be cleaned. A mild post intubation cough can sometimes be present for a day or 2 from irritation but it should resolve quickly. If the cough is persistent and especially if the cough is productive, moist, or accompanied by nasal discharge, decreased appetite, or lethargy than this would be more concerning. With recent anesthesia we would then consider aspiration pneumonia and heart failure as possibilites. The easiest thing to do is to have a recheck for chest xrays to rule out something more serious.
