What's on my dog's back leg near his butt? Maggots or a growth?

It does appear that he has developed a growth on his back leg, and I do recommend all abnormal growths be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if they are benign (non-cancerous) or not. While it could be a cyst, insect bite, or wart, there are certain types of skin cancer (such as mast cell tumors) that can look similar to what you are seeing. I would recommend Marvin see his regular veterinarian and have a needle aspirate to help determine what the growth might be, and determine any further treatment that may be needed. Good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I don’t think that looks like a bite wound. It looks more like a growth that has ruptured. I recommend having a vet look at it. If he is licking it, it is infected and needs antibiotics. If he isn’t walking and he is licking it, it is painful. A closer look by a vet may locate a cause. Good luck and kisses to Guero!

Hello. This is definitely an ulcerated lesion, but a picture does not tell me if this is just a chronic, inflammatory reaction, a sever bacterial infection, or cancer. I think it is best to have your veterinarian take a look at this & see if all that is needed is a course of antibiotics to clear things up. This requires therapy as soon as possible for the maggots and the likely underlying infection. This is not something you can get over the counter and this requires a visit to a veterinarian for further assessment and local and systemic therapy. Have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bujji! It is very hard to see the wound, but in the last picture it looks more like a mass involving his left foot. He should be using an E-collar to prevent licking and be kept indoors to prevent flies from landing on the wound resulting in maggots. Bujji needs to be seen by a Vet to see if that is a mass on the foot or if the foot is broken. The only thing I can recommend is the above plus cleaning the wound twice daily with water and soap and applying mupirocin ointment after each cleaning. He needs oral antibiotics and pain medications. We can not prescribe medications legally because the law requires a valid Veterinary Client Patient Relationship. In order to have that we need to be able to examine him in person. I wish Bujji the best!

These skin tags are usually benign and may just fall off leaving small skin sore but Lucky will need to be fully examined by a vet to make the final diagnosis. Please, take your dog to your local vets tomorrow for an appointment. Your vet may want to remove it under local anaesthesia if it is painful for Lucky
