My dog attacks her brother when traveling. Is it anxiety?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 8 months old | 13 lbs

I have 2 small dogs that live and sleep together (chihuahua, poodle).At home, they are the best of friends. Licking and cuddling. Never any fights. The problem is when we travel. The last 2 times we have traveled with them, my girl attacked my boy because he was being held/petted. They went to a pet sitter overnight and she attacked him twice. After she attacks him she goes right back to him and wants to lick where she bit him. Is she having anxiety problems or training issues? Both are fixed.

It could be redirected aggression from stress when her routine is changed. You could try an Adaptil collar and Solliquin chews and see if that helps. Otherwise, your vet could prescribe an anti-anxiety, like Prozac or Trazodone.

Stress can trigger behavior issues quite easily, and if she feels pressured, afraid, or like she has to compete with your other dog at all in this new environment, she could become aggressive. If she's eating and drinking fine, and has no diarrhea or vomiting or other physical issues, it's likely stress. You need to somehow get some anti-anxiety medication for her like Lorazepam from a veterinarian and try to keep them separated. Good luck!

I would make sure the dog that has become aggressive isn't having any other issues like pain or discomfort. Also, has anything change in your schedule or house that could have made her feel more insecure or anxious? You could talk to your vet about starting her on an anti-anxiety medicine like fluoxetine as this may help. I would also make sure they aren't becoming aggressive over any treats, bones, toys, etc. I hope this helps and she starts to act like herself soon.

Calming chews, such as Composure chews (by VetriScience) may help but they are not "magic pills". You will need to modify her behavior. This may require the assistance of a certified trainer.
