My dog was attacked, is lethargic, constipated, on pain meds. Advice?

It’s been a rough few day for Max! It’s not unusual after diarrhea to have a few days without a bowel movement. The limping is concerning. I would recommend that he be evaluated by a veterinarian. They can look for signs of trauma/ fracture, infection, embedded foreign object etc.. They may prescribe some dog safe pain medication as well. Good luck and I hope he is back to normal soon.

Hello. I am so sorry that Max has had such a serious surgery. It is very normal for him to be sleepy as his body has undergone a very trying trauma. Plus, there is still some residual anesthetic drugs in his system. If he needs assistance getting up, placing a towel around his chest & using this as a lift device will help. Otherwise, you might just put some absorbent pads under him so that if he pees, it will at least keep him a little drier. He should feel better tomorrow & get stronger each day. Poor Max. I’m sorry he’s not feeling well. Im suspicious from what I see in the picture that his neck or back hurts. If he is not back to normal tomorrow then I would recommend that he be evaluated by a veterinarian. Then they can decide if dog safe pain medication is appropriate for him or if other diagnostics should be done. I hope he improves quickly.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mila. I am sorry to hear about her injuries. Was she placed under anesthesia to clean and treat her wounds? If so, anesthesia can slow down her gastrointestinal tract. It is normal not to defecate for a day or two afterwards. Otherwise, it may be painful for her to hold the position to defecate. I would talk to her veterinarian today to see if her pain medications need to be adjusted or if she just needs more time. I hope this information helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is unlikely due to him being in shock. This could be due to the pain control medications which usually have a sedative effect. Another possibility is that he could still be in pain or perhaps there was further injury that you are unable to see from the outside. Poor guy. : ( It sounds like he may have a severe reaction to the ticks or any number of underlying problems such as tick paralysis. He needs to go to a vet pronto for some much needed antibiotics to hopefully help stabilize his condition. I would recommend consulting with your vet for antibiotics (i.e. Doxycycline) and pain medication (i.e. Gabapentin) to help poor Max. I am not sure what medications you are specifically referring to; however generally speaking most antibiotics don't cause constipation; however Tramadol (opiate pain medication) can cause constipation in some cases. I am sorry to hear that Dakota has pyometra. She will need surgery to remove the infected uterus. Until then she will likely not remain stable and happy, and continue to wax and wane with her activity level. I hope you can get her treated soon and back to her normal self. Best wishes.
