My dog ate weed and is sleepy. Should I be concerned and call the vet?

My dog got a hold of weed he seems okay but he just seems more lazy &a sleepy then usual should I be concerned ??

Yes, I would be concerned in that marijuana is toxic to dogs and it can lead to further symptoms such as incoordination, wobbliness, dilated pupils, excessive drooling, and seizures, tremors, and comas in extreme cases. It's rare that marijuana toxicity is fatal, but it can happen and not every animal reacts the same to the toxicity. Because of this, it's best that your dog is seen by a vet immediately for decontamination procedures. Please take him into an ER vet clinic if your regular vet is now closed; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

This is very concerning. Cannabis is toxic to dogs and you need to take him to a vet or emergency service right away. He will need to be monitored, receive iv fluids and will have to receive activated charcoal to hopefully purge most of the toxins. Please take him to a pet ER right away.

If she ingested the marijuana within the past 90 minutes I suggest you take her to a veterinarian (there is an emergency clinic in Pueblo, or maybe one of the vets in Trinidad or Walsenburg may be on call) who can make her regurgitate the marijuana. If it was longer than 90 minutes ago you should observe her. If she appears "drunk", has a very slow or very fast heart rate or appears very sleepy, she should be seen by a vet or at the Pet ER.

This is an emergency. You need to take your dog to a PetER right now. Dogs can die from Marijuana intoxication. He will likely be kept in hospital with supportive care (active charcoal, iv fluids, etc). Please take him now.

Hi, fortunately marijuana ingestion is not usually fatal in dogs. It does depend on how much of the pot was in the food he ate. There is no way to tell how severe his symptoms will be. If you can't take him to a vet, I would put him in a cool room on a soft bed with a towel underneath as they can dribble urine when this happens. Marijuana ingestions usually takes a few hours, up to 12 hours, to get out of their systems. If you notice his breathing getting extremely slow and shallow he needs to see a vet. Most likely, this won't happen and there should be no long term ill effects. Good luck, I hope this helps!

The biggest thing to do with THC exposure is to make sure they are in a safe area where they cannot fall or hurt themselves, and often a dark quiet area is best tolerated. It is not unusual for dogs to dribble urine when they are under the effects of THC. With very large ingestions, as it sounds like Opal experienced, they can have depressed breathing, and be unable to stand or walk. My puppy ate marijuana resin and is drowsy, wobbly, and throwing up.

It can be very dangerous given her weight and age. I suggest to bring her to your local vet for a full health check (heart rate, breathing rate, temperature need to be monitored) asap. She might need to be hospitalized and receive intravenous fluidotherapy depending on the severity of the symptoms. Please post again on the forum if you would like to discuss it further. My dog ate a marijuana chocolate edible. Can I help at home?

Although the THC content can cause some severe symptoms in dogs, it is not likely to be fatal or to cause any long lasting effect, the symptoms can last up to 48 hours though so i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get to get supportive treatment. the chocolate itself is actually more dangerous that he canabis but if the amount is not more than 15 gr then this is fine as well, it's a low amount of chocolate, nothing that would cause any serious toxic effects.

My dog ate marijuana ash. Should I make her vomit or let her sleep?

It's not common for dogs to eat the ash of marijuana - although of course they do frequently eat the "fresh" stuff as well as foods with marijuana baked in - so unfortunately I can't find any information specific to the dangers of its ingestion, and I've never treated it. My suspicion is that your dog will likely be OK, as I would guess that there would only be traces of THC present in the burned plant. However, the poison control center, as referenced below, maintains a database on every imaginable toxicity, and if you are still concerned I would recommend giving them a call.

Dog ate THC edibles, unresponsive. What if I can't afford a vet?

How big is your dog? The bigger your dog is the more likely that she will be ok. Keep her in a safe, quiet, dark room where she cannot hurt herself. She may vomit, which could result in aspiration pneumonia if she's too comatose to control her airway. (If she vomits, she could suck some vomit down her airway into her lungs resulting in pneumonia). In a worst case scenario, she could stop breathing due to the severe depression of brain activity. Her blood pressure could also drop dangerously low which could potentially cause kidney damage. If you are absolutely unable to get her to a vet for financial reasons, just keep her in a safe environment away from noise and lights. I'd give it a 50/50 that she may be just fine; however, the other 50% obviously is concern that she may suffer severe complications which could potentially include death. She should start to improve over 12-24 hours but it could take upwards of 2-3 days to be back to normal if she recovers well. If you are able to find a way to afford getting her to the vet, your vet can treat her with IV fluids to help maintain her blood pressure and help speed up metabolism of the THC. They can give her anti vomiting medication to help reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia, and they can treat with medications to help support heart rate and blood pressure if her heart rate is dangerously low. Yes, this certainly sounds suspicious for some type of toxicity. It's common for dogs to act like this with marijuana toxicity, in my experience, but ingestion of certain medications or other drugs could also cause symptoms like this. I would recommend taking your pup to an emergency clinic tonight for an exam, as this could be a serious problem depending on exactly what she might have gotten into, and how much. The vet there can do blood work or urine testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

Yes, you should be worried. He could have eaten something poisonous or possibly ingested something that either irritated his stomach or is causing an obstruction. Please get him to your vet for an exam as soon as you can.
