My dog ate a large supreme pizza with onions. What should I do?

It is unlikely that there was enough onion present to cause a problem, but eating that much pizza will likely cause some gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) which could lead to vomiting and diarrhea. He could also develop pancreatitis. If he starts vomiting, having diarrhea, isn't wanting to eat, or seems lethargic, please take him to your vet for treatment. In the meantime, withhold for at least 12 hours, then offer small amounts of. a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice for the next couple of days. Onions will cause oxidative damage to the red blood cells which can result in anemia. If the onions are going to be an issue, it will be a few days before you would see this, and generally would present as decreased appetite and lethargy. If those symptoms are noted, get him in to your vet for bloodwork. The published toxic dose of onions for dogs is 15-30 grams/kilogram body weight. Symptoms (lethargy, pale gums, discolored urine, wobbly gait or difficulty breathing) may not manifest until 2-4 days after ingestion. Depending on Manna's weight, a one time ingestion will likely result in nothing worse than some gastrointestinal upset (vomiting and diarrhea). Fast her for 24 hours, allowing small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve before transitioning slowly to her regular diet. Monitor for the symptoms listed above and seek veterinary attention if any develop or if any gastrointestinal upset does not resolve.

A few pieces of onion ingested by a dog of Mochi's size will likely cause nothing worse than some minor stomach upset, if anything at all. She would need to eat 2 or 3 med/large onions in order to be at risk of serious toxicity. If she develops vomiting or diarrhea but continues to behave normally, you can fast her for 24 hours then feed a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. The toxic amount of onion in dogs is 100 grams (about the size of a medium onion) per 20kg of a dog's weight to cause toxic effects, which means that a 45 pound dog would have to eat a medium to large onion to experience dangerous toxicity levels. Luckily in this case, two onion rings will not contain that much onion. There is a concern about the fattiness of the onion rings, as they are fried, and fried and fatty foods can cause pancreatitis in dogs. I would monitor her for vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, a hunched up appearance, vomiting undigested food, and lethargy. If you see any of those signs, have her seen by a vet immediately. Hopefully, however, she will be just fine, and I don't think in this case, you need to do anything. Don't induce vomiting, and there's no need to take her into a vet unless you see any of the signs I just mentioned. I hope this helps!

Probably not, but dogs should be eating onions or garlic in any form. If it was only 1 piece one time, then you should be okay. But if it is multiples pieces or 1 piece several times, then Lilly may need to see a vet to check for anemia.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Pizza in and of it's self is not toxic. If there was an excessive amount of onions then maybe. Otherwise one of 2 things may happen: 1) Nothing! 2) Molly develops vomiting and/or diarrhea from an upset stomach or pancreas. It isn't wrong to feed her a bland diet for a few days. Boil chicken breast or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. I hope this helps and I wish Molly the best!

Onion in toxic to dogs but it does not sound that Dakota has eaten large enough amount of onions to develop intoxication. The toxic dose of onion is about 15-20g/kg of bodyweight, so it means that Dakota would have to eat about 300-400 grams of onion (which is a whole large onion) to get into trouble. Please, keep an eye on her at home, she may develop mild signs of gastroenteritis (one vomit, mild diarrhea etc) but there should not be any other worrying symptoms.
