My 15lb dog ate a sugar-free mint. Is xylitol poisoning a concern?

Xylitol causes hypoglycemia and potentially liver failure. If Arlo May have ingested xylitol in the past 48 hours I’d recommend contacting the Pet Poison Helpline (www.petpoisonhelpline.com). If it’s been more than 48 hours I’d recommend seeing your vet to have them check liver values.

Hi, It is hard to say without more specific information about the dose , concentration of the ingested xylitol. In general a dose of 50 milligrams (mg) of xylitol per pound of body weight (which is 100mg/kg) considered toxic. Xylitol will cause rapid release of insulin which causes a rapid and profound decrease in the level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia), an effect that occurs within 10-60 minutes of eating the xylitol. Untreated, this hypoglycemia can be life-threatening. Signs of hypoglycemia may include: vomiting, weakness, lack of coordination, difficulty walking or standing, lethargy, tremors, seizures and coma. If your dog ate toxic amount take him to the vet ASAP, if not yet showing signs induction of vomiting may be done and if there are signs he will need immediate treatment. If you'd like you can post the question again with the amount in the tablet. With melatonin there are some conditions where it is given to dogs again at the right dose. again more information about the dose is crucial here. I also have no information about your dog body weight but small dog will normally treated with 1 mg tablet and medium dog 1.5mg. If the Brach's contained xylitol, it would say it on the label. Since the ingredients say sugar, it won't contain xylitol, so they won't get poisoning from this. I would be concerned they may have some stomach upset, such as vomiting or diarrhea. If you see that, a loss of appetite, or lethargy, have them seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

If she licked it without swallowing it, it should not be a problem at all as it is just a small quantity. Strict monitoring for any sign of weakness or lethargy, depression, walking drunk acute collapse, vomiting, trembling or tremoring is needed. Bentley would have had to ingest 2410mg of xylitol for it to be a toxic dose. I doubt that him licking a basically empty container would have enough to harm him. But it isn't wrong to double check. Yes this could be life threatening if the Extra was sugar free and contains xylitol. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and is fatal without treatment. Because I'm not sure if the Extra Oliver ate contain xylitol, and if you aren't sure either, the best thing to do is rush him into the vet immediately. The vet can treat him for xylitol toxicity if the gum contained it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

It is likely this hard candy will be broken down in her stomach by the stomach acid, but the sugar from it may give her a tummy ache. I would check the ingredients of the hard candy to make sure there is no xylitol in it. That's because xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, and if it does have that ingredient, she will need to see a vet immediately. Xylitol ingestion can be fatal. Otherwise, she should be fine aside from the chance of GI upset in the form of vomiting and/or diarrhea. Should you see that, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.
