My dog ate Suboxone. She's lethargic and not eating. What should I do?

Gaga will be very sleepy and lethargic after the extra dose of Buprenex but the symptoms should wear off within 6-8hrs. However, in unlikely case that Gaga is overexcited, dysphoric or she is deeply sedated, you should get in touch with your local vets right away.

Hi, Gabapentin overdose can cause sedation and drowsiness and its effect should gradually disappear over the next 12 hours. If Bunty is excessively sedated I would ring your closer vets to have her checked over. Hopefully she has not eaten it !

Buprenorphine often causes sedation as a side effect - sometimes a lot of sedation, as sounds like the case with Lady! The dose she received (0.3 mg for a 25 pound dog) is within the normal dosage range, and should not be expected to cause any serious problems at all :) The sedation should wear off in the next 6-8 hours, or possibly even sooner as the drug levels in her body start to drop. Buprenorphine has no negative impact on the pancreas at all, and is very commonly used for pain control in dogs with pancreatitis. I hope Lady starts to feel better soon!

If she has been like this for more than 24 hours, then it would be best to take her to the vet. She may be reacting negatively to her medication and need treatment to get better. If she is currently on medication, then it's best to stop it at this time until you are able to speak with your veterinarian, or have her seen by a veterinarian. If Noelani had ingested either meth or coke this morning, I would certainly have expected signs to develop by now (8 hours later). If the bag was well sealed and ingested whole, it may pass in her GI tract without her absorbing anything, but it is always safest to have her examined. We commonly see significant excitation with these drugs which can progress to heart or nervous system problems including seizures. If Noelani starts developing any signs of hyperexcitability, I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian immediately. If he is very lethargic it is unrelated to the medication. I would encourage a vet exam for the foot injury if he is worsening. Have a great day!

Hi, I see you've posted again...you have confirmed that this is a massive overdose of meloxicam for a dog that size and it would definitely cause her to be lethargic. Overdoses are most concerning for causing stomach and/or intestinal ulcers/bleeding. It can also cause significant damage to the kidneys. For these reasons, I recommend you take Polly to the vet immediately. There are medications and treatments that can keep this from getting worse and it's imperative that they are given soon. However, it's worth double-checking the syringe. Liquid meloxicam is usually given with a small 1ml syringe. The 1ml may be written as 1.0ml, which could be confused with 10.
