My dog ate styrofoam. Is it dangerous? What symptoms to watch for?

My dog just ate some styrofoam. She is 65 lbs. I don't know exactly how much she ate, but I think she chewed it before eating it.

Poor girl. Styrofoam does have the potential to cause an obstruction, although smaller pieces have less of a tendency to do so. Monitor her for signs of an intestinal obstruction which includes excessive vomiting, lack of appetite, abdominal pain and weakness. Typically signs of an obstruction will occur within 24-48 hrs. If she seems fine beyond this then she's in the clear; however if you note these symptoms then take her to the vet immediately.
In the meantime, feed her wet (canned) food to help bind it and then take her on 20-30 minute brisk walks twice a day to promote GI motility.

She's large enough I would expect the styrofoam to pass especially if she chewed it. Ultimately, it depends on the size. You need to monitor her for vomiting and decreased appetite. If you observe these symptoms take her to the veterinarian for abdominal x-rays. If all goes well, she should pass it.

Fortunately, styrofoam isn't considered toxic to dogs if they ingest it - but you're correct that it could possibly cause an obstruction if he swallowed a relatively large piece. As long as he's acting normal - eating and drinking, active, and having regular bowel movements - you shouldn't need to worry.

Possible signs of an obstruction would include repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, not wanting to eat, or not having bowel movements. If you see any of these symptoms over the next few days, I would recommend taking him to the vet right away for an exam and x-rays.

Hello. Styrofoam could cause an intestinal blockage. I would bring him to the vet to get them to make him throw up. Otherwise monitor him very carefully for eating and pooping the next few days and any vomiting or inappetance he may need surgery. If you can bring him to the vet now. Good luck!

If she ate it within the last three hours, then it's possible that it can be retrieved from the stomach if you take her to the vet. My dog ate carpet foam. Should I be worried? What are the risks?

Hello, I am very sorry to hear about Sandy. Depending on the amount ingested or if he chewed the pieces or ingested them in big chunks, this may or may not cause a problem. If this happened recently you could bring Sandy to your veterinarian to try and induce vomiting and get rid of the foam. If it has been longer than 1-2 hours ago I would recommend continuing to monitor Sandy. It is possible that he will experience GI upset secondary to this material since it is foreign to his GI tract. It is also possible that the foam could lead to an obstruction if a large amount was ingested. I would recommend monitoring him for any vomiting, diarrhea, inappetance, or lethargy. If he develops any of these signs I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian. They can perform x-rays to determine if the foam is causing a blockage in his intestines and discuss the need for further treatment with you. Hope this helps, good luck!

If you see any of these symptoms in the next 24-48hrs, you should take Rayne to your local vets as an emergency. However, if she chewed the plastic into small pieces, most likely she will pass it with her stools and she will not show any worrying symptoms at all.

Monitor her for the next 24 hours. Watch for lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, straining to defecate or abdominal pain. If she goes beyond this with no symptoms, then she may be in the clear. If she develops any of the above symptoms, have her physically examined by your veterinarian. Pancreatitis or intestinal obstruction are real concerns after such a "meal".

My 4-month-old puppy ate foam from a pillow, what should I do now?

Oh dear! Puppies often chew things they shouldn't, unfortunately. If Ruben did swallow some of the foam, the biggest risk is that it could get stuck in his stomach or intestines and cause a blockage. Or, it may pass through his system with no problems at all. I would keep a close eye on him for the next 2-3 days. As long as he's eating and drinking, acting normal, and having regular bowel movements, you shouldn't need to worry. If he stops eating, has any vomiting, or does not have a bowel movement for more than 24 hours, then I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam and x-rays since these can be signs of a blockage.

My dog ate a packing peanut. Will she be okay or need a vet?

There are typically two types of packing peanuts. The first type is biodegradable, and the other is made of Styrofoam. To tell which type she ate, drop one in water. If it softens and dissolves, then it's biodegradable. This type will likely pass on it's own, especially if she ate only one. I would monitor her for signs of blockage, such as vomiting, lethargy, and anorexia. If you see any of those signs, she needs to go into the vet right away. If the peanuts your dog ate are Styrofoam, I would call your vet to see if they want you to induce vomiting. It may be that it will pass on it's own, or it could become stuck. There's more of a chance of this getting stuck than the other type because it isn't biodegradable. If your vet doesn't recommend to induce vomiting, you will have to monitor for the signs of obstruction I mentioned above. If it becomes stuck, she will need surgery to have it removed.
