My dog ate a steak bone and has diarrhea. Could it be an obstruction?

Diarrhea is a sign of an obstruction, and if Mongo does have one, the longer it stays in there, the sicker she will be become. Obstructions will prevent blood flow to that particular section of the intestines, and that section of intestines will die without blood flow. Because she ate a bone and there is a potential that it could be stuck in her intestines, she needs to see a vet immediately for x-rays to see if she does have a bone there or not. If she does, she will need surgery to remove it. My advice is to take her into a vet as soon as possible.

That would certainly be my advise to you regarding Joy's diarrhea. As long as there is not obvious blood in the stool and there is no evidence of serious illness, I think treating her conservatively first is perfectly reasonable. I would definitely hold off on the treats for the time being and just stick with the chicken and rice. In terms of steak bones, you always want to avoid giving any cooked bone to a dog. They can splinter in the GI tract causing perforation or ulceration, resulting in disastrous consequences at times. Uncooked bones (such as parts of a raw diet) would be acceptable in small quantities as. If the diarrhea doesn't seem to clear up in another day or two or clinical signs broaden in some way, get Joy into the vet for a work-up. Hope this is helpful.

Hi! Dogs do sometimes get a little blood in their stool when they are having diarrhea. Sometimes this is just due to the straining (to produce the diarrhea!) But, we do usually recommend having a pet checked out when bleeding occurs, especially in Lucky's case, due to the history of eating a steak bone. Your vet could examine him, possibly take an Xray, and might be able to prescribe some medications to help ease the diarrhea! Best of luck!

Poor Dakota. It sounds like he feels really bad. Bones can splinter in the GI tract and cause quite a bit of damage and pain, so I would recommend having your veterinarian examine him to make sure that he doesn't have any more bone fragments in his GI tract that are causing a problem. You vet can also prescribe an antibiotic that will help resolve the diarrhea and prevent any problems that the bone may have caused in the GI tract to help him feel better ASAP. Good luck! Cooked bones can cause a problem for dogs in a number of ways. If Chip broke the bone while eating it, it could splinter and cause problems in the GI tract. Bones can also get stuck in the GI tract. The fat can also cause vomiting and diarrhea. Diarrhea that continues for more than a few days, or is associated with blood in the stool, vomiting, lethargy or a poor appetite is a reason for a visit to your veterinarian. Since Chip has blood throughout his stool, I would recommend a visit to the vet. In the meantime, if he is eating and drinking normally, we will often recommend a bland easily digested diet consisting of ½ cooked white rice and ½ cooked white meat chicken (boiled without any skin or bones). If he does well with a bland diet and his diarrhea resolves, then you can slowly transition back to his normal diet over a few days. I'm quite concerned this bone is causing Simba's problems. Bones should never be given to dogs because they cause obstructions, and he is potentially showing signs of an obstruction. You need to take him into a vet immediately.

Poor Devious! Many dogs will have an upset stomach after eating something like this. The biggest concern is that the rib bones can have sharp edges and may cause an intestinal perforation, or they could become stuck and cause a blockage in her intestines. Signs of these problems would include repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, and not wanting to eat - if she develops any of these symptoms, she needs to see a vet immediately as she may need emergency surgery to remove the bones. If she is acting normal right now apart from some runny stool, you can try feeding her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next 2-3 days to help settle her stomach and get things back to normal. If this doesn't help, or if she develops any other symptoms such as the ones I listed above, you will need to take her to the vet right away for an exam and treatment.
