My dog ate a sock, vomited, and now has a cough. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 4 months old | 135 lbs

7 Year old Male Doberman ate a sock and brought it back over night by vomiting. Since the early hours of this morning he has had a cough when he lays down as if he wants to be sick. He ate some breakfast and has drank water today and has kept this down but does keeps bringing clear phlegm/mucus back when he has a coughing fit. His breathing is fine but he looks a little sorry for himself. It sounds like a cough but could be making the noise when he is breathing in rather than coughing out.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Diesell may just have some irritation from swallowing and vomitting the sock, but it is also possible that he aspirated some fluid or food into his lungs while trying to bring up the sock. I would recommend taking Diesell to vet today if he is continuously coughing. If he did aspirate at all it could turn to pneumonia quickly.

I hope Diesel is back to normal soon.
