My dog ate a hole in the wall. Is eating Sheetrock dangerous for pets?

Dry wall ingestion may cause gastrointestinal upset. If a large enough quantity is ingested, it may pose a risk of obstruction. Monitor for vomiting​, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy or abdominal pain. Seek veterinary attention if any of these symptoms develop.

If Jordy did eat the dry wall by biggest concern would be possible obstruction if he swallowed a big piece instead of chewing it. However, as you know dry wall really crumbles and I suspect you would see evidence on the floor or in/ around his mouth if he has been messing around with it. I would monitor him for any signs of nausea or Vomiting. On the other hand you could be very proactive and have him seen at an ER today and have them induce vomiting to see if he vomits anything out. Puppies are notorious for destructive behavior. Most dogs will outgrow this by 2 years of age but not all do. Additionally, this behavior is not only destructive but it can lead to ingesting toxin substances and intestinal foreign bodies which are fatal without treatment. Patches needs to be crated any time you are not physically watching her. It's safer that way. Ferrets can definitely be naughty at times! The Sheetrock can cause intestinal obstruction or inflammation, so things to look out for include loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. Should these signs occur, your pet should be seen by a vet right away. In the future, Bubbles and Buddy should be supervised when out of their enclosure, or given a secure area of the home.

While modern paints do not contain lead, chewing wood can still cause intestinal injury and even result in foreign bodies. Signs of this would include lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, and/or diarrhea. You should do your best to reprimand Louie if you see him chewing the wall or furniture, and can even try some Bitter Apple spray to deter the chewing. I hope this helps and that all is well!

I would recommend contacting Midnight's vet about this. Depending on how long ago he ate it it may be recommended to induce vomiting and to try to get him to throw up the sheet. Otherwise closely monitor him for the next few days to weeks for any sign of intestinal blockage; which can include vomiting, straining to defecate, painful in the abdomen, not eating or drinking. Dogs often make bad decisions and swallow many things they shouldn’t. Rocks, underwear even razor blades. There is a concern that these rocks could cause an intestinal obstruction which requires surgery. I recommend to have her supervised at all times outside to make sure she does not continue to eat rocks or other objects she should not.
