My dog ate a Senokot pill and vomited. Should I be concerned?

Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Female | spayed | 8 months and 11 days old | 13 lbs

I think Sophie got a hold of a Sennacot tablet and ingested it. I don't know when exactly but an hour ago vomited very orange bile. It did not look or smell like blood. She is in her crate comfortable now. I am withholding water and food. Besides diarrhea should I be worried? I will take her to vet if she has anymore vomiting.

Senokot tablets (stool softeners) are safe to use in dogs and the dosage is 25-50mg per pet for small breed dogs. Your pet may experiene some soft stool but she likely will be just fine. The vomiting is likely some mild stomach upset, which can occur with just about any medication or from her ingesting something else she shouldn't have. I would recommend giving her a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for the next few feedings to settle her stomach and fast her (no food, only water) for at least 12 hrs following her last vomiting episode as you have indicated you have already started to do. Otherwise, if she continues to vomit, there may be something else going on concurrently, and I would suggest taking her in to your vet for an overall health check.
I hope that Sophie feels better soon! She likely will be just fine, especially if her energy level is good and she continues to have a good appetite with no further vomiting episodes. Best of luck to you both and take care. : )

    You may notice some diarrhea since the product is a laxative, but Sophie should be ok otherwise. Try feeding her again tonight and see how she does. If she continues to vomit or has copious diarrhea taking her to the vet would be a good idea. You don’t want her to become dehydrated from fluid loss.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Senne is not toxic to dogs but this medication will produce loose stools. Please, monitor Poppy at home for the next 8-12hrs. if she develops bad diarrhea you should make sure that she drinks plenty of water to maintain hydration. The diarrhea will likely be self-limiting and your puppy should be back to normal within 24-48hrs.

Unfortunately I cannot legally recommend using a laxative on Sophie without seeing her in person. Because she has been constipated for a few days and is now yelping when trying to go, it's time to see the vet to get treated. Please take her into a vet today.

Hello. You can offer Maggie 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin ( not pie filling ) twice a day. This is a very safe laxative. My dog ate Dulcolax. Is it safe and what should I watch for?
Bisacodyl (Dulcolax) is often used as a laxative for dogs, so there should be no problem other than soft stool, maybe some loose stool. Side effects such as cramps, nausea and diarrhea are common, especially if your dog takes other medications. However these should pass relatively quickly. If those side effects appear severe, have your veterinarian examine your dog and make sure there is not another problem lurking.

I suspect Harold will be fine. He may get some diarrhea or softened stool. Sometimes these human stool softeners can work too well. If he gets severe diarrhea, decreases drinking or seems uncomfortable, take him to the veterinarian immediately. Feeding him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and boiled plain white rice may help to counter act any GI upset that may occur. I hope this helps to point you in the right direction. My dog threw up blood after Vanectyl dose change. What should I do?
I would continue at the dose of 1 tablet every 12 hours and taper off as prescribed by your vet. This medication may not be the cause of the vomiting, though, and if it continues tomorrow I would take Patsy to the vet for a recheck. Sometimes vomiting can cause irritation to the esophagus and you may see a tiny amount of blood. However, if she continues vomiting and the amount of blood seems like it is getting bigger, she should see a vet immediately. You might take her food away for 12 hours to help with nausea, though she should be encouraged to drink water or pedialyte.

My dog threw up after OTC pain meds. How long until she feels better?
I am not sure which OTC pain and anti-inflammatory medication you used but some of them can be toxic to dogs. Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, and Naproxen can cause liver/kidney problems when used in dogs. Aspirin can be used but it can cause gastric ulcers. She really should be examined by your vet to determine the cause, especially since she has been feeling bad for over a day. Your vet can run labwork, if needed, and prescribe medications to help treat. She may need a gateointestinal protectant or other medications. Hope she feels better soon.
