My dog ate a pork bone days ago. Could she have an obstruction now?

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 60 lbs

My dog snatched a pork rib bone out of my fiancés hand on Monday (6 days ago) she has been fine since. Totally normal. Eating regularly, pooping and acting normal. Yesterday she did not poop at all and today only small amounts. Everything else is still normal. The day after she did it we fed her in small amounts to help the stomach acid break it down. Am I being paranoid? Or should I be worried that this could still be an obstruction?

I can understand your concern and worry, but there is is highly unlikely that she would have an obstruction if she'd just now developed mild symptoms 6 days after the fact. If she were going to have problems she would have had it the day or two after she ingested the bone. She likely is just having slowed GI mobility and will likely regulate herself soon. I would recommend continuing to monitor her for the next few days to see if she returns to having normal sized bowel movements. You can also offer her some probiotics (Culturelle over the counter) and fiber (1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin/ not the pie filling) If she doesn't get better, or starts having other symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy), then it's best to have her seen by your vet to determine what is going on internally. Constipation is pretty uncommon in dogs, so the bigger concern would be an obstruction, or a GI upset from raw meat (such as diarrhea or pancreatitis). Fortunately, raw bones are quite digestible in the stomach and often pass without incident. Monitor Bayliss closely for a decreased appetite, vomiting, or lethargy. As long as he is eating normally without vomiting, I am not worried about obstruction. However, if he shows any symptoms of lethargy, inappetance, or vomiting then a vet visit is appropriate. Dog ate pork bone, can swallow. Is bone stuck or just upset stomach?

If Zoey was able to swallow the food and water, I don't think the pork chop bone would be stuck in her throat. It could be upsetting her stomach. Keep a close eye on her, and if she is still acting this way in the morning, have her seen by a vet. Take her into a vet immediately if she starts vomiting, there is blood in her vomit, blood in her feces, she has diarrhea, stops eating, or becomes lethargic. I hope this helps!

Dog ate chicken bones, now bloated and struggling to poop. Should I worry?

First off, good on you for taking Deliliah into the ER vet the day she ate those things! It was exactly the right thing to do. I will say it is a little concerning that she is now struggling to poop and there haven't been any signs of the bone fragments thus far. Given that some is still coming out and she is eating and drinking normally, I would monitor her for now. Give her a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food to see if that helps her pass feces easier. If she is still acting this way in another 24-48 hours, or she stops eating, become lethargic, or doesn't pass feces at all, then I would take her into a vet right away.

My dog ate something unknown. She's eating. What are obstruction signs?

Given that Snowball has eaten twice since and isn't vomiting, I would monitor her for signs an obstruction to be safe. It can take a couple of days for signs to be seen which include vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, not pooping, and severe lethargy. If you see any of those signs, take her into a vet right away. Otherwise if you don't see any of those signs, she will be just fine. Best of luck!

My dog ate a cooked pork shoulder bone. What should I do now?

If it happened in the past hour I would recommend heading to an emergency vet - they can potentially take an x-ray and determine whether or not it would be worthwhile to attempt to induce vomiting. If the bone was sharp or very large there are risks to inducing vomiting so it may not be worthwhile. Unfortunately I find that pork bones in particular can cause obstructions or constipation. If the vet decides there is too much risk to inducing vomiting they may prescribe some medications to help protect the stomach or a diet change while monitoring closely for any vomiting, decrease in appetite, or difficulty defecating.

I'm concerned this porkchop bone is causing problems, potentially an obstruction. If Vanillabean does have an obstruction, it is fatal without treatment. You need to take her into a vet immediately.

They can usually pass without an issue, however fatty or salty meats can irritate the intestinal tract causing problems like pancreatitis. I would monitor Nana for signs of vomiting,diarrhea or abdominal pain and have her seen by your veterinarian if noted.
