My dog ate mixed nuts. Are they toxic? Should I take her to the vet?

Hello. As long as there were not a majority of macadamia nuts in the mix, there are no significant worries. Trixxie may vomit up the whole thing, or she may have some diarrhea, but this will all be self limiting & usually does nor require medical care. The only possibility of problems could come from the relatively high fat content of the nuts which may cause a bout of pancreatitis. So if Trixxie vomits or has diarrhea multiple times, accompanied by loss of appetite, excessive water intake & any indication of fever or abdominal pain, have her seen as quickly as you can. I don't think you need to be too concerned. Nuts are not recommended to feed dogs, because they are high in fat and can therefore lead to some vomiting and diarrhea from gastroenteritis, and potentially some pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas--causes pain and vomiting ). The only exception to the guideline regarding nuts is macadamia nuts, which are specifically toxic to dogs. As far as mold goes, average refrigerator-household-food mold could cause some gastroenteritis but is unlikely to be a major issue. Compost piles and truly rotting food, however, are dangerous if ingested as they contain mycotoxins. (again, not the case with "refrigerator" mold). You can feed him a bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice) for a few days to help minimize gastroenteritis. Walnuts are not considered toxic in dogs unless the actual shell of a walnut is ingested or the walnuts are moldy. These nuts do, however, contain a large amount of fats and oils which in some dogs can result in gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting and diarrhea, and in some cases pancreatitis. Hello. There is nothing toxic in pecans that would harm a dog. At most, she may have an upset stomach for a day or so & may vomit or have diarrhea. If she feels like eating, you might want to feed her lightly with small meals ( about 1-2 tablespoons at a time ) of cooked ground turkey mixed with plain boiled white rice or low fat cottage cheese. Nutella can be toxic not because of the amount of chocolate (which is known to be minimal) but for the fat content (the same for maple syrup). Toxicity would depend on his size/weight and amount ingested. Gastrointestinal signs like vomiting and diarrhoea will probably occur but you should not notice anything else if the quantity ingested is minimal (please give us more indications about it). As a general approach I would recommend close monitoring and withhold food for the next 12 hours. Start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence or any other sign you may be worried about. Wasabi can also upset their belly. I am concerned that if he suffers from a chronic history of pancreatitis, he may develop this from eating fatty items like almonds. I recommend that you monitor Quigley closely for any evidence of gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, diarrhea and/or inappetence. if any of these signs are observed, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. The problem with this ingestion is the fat content, which can cause pancreatitis. Watch for vomiting, abdominal pain, a hunched up appearance, lethargy, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. If you see any of these signs, take Pluto into a vet immediately.
