My dog ate sugar-free gum with maltitol. Is it safe without xylitol?

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | spayed | 8 years and 1 month old | 98 lbs

My dog ate Orbitz sugar free bubblemint gum. I looked at the ingredients on the package and online. It says it has Maltitol and sorbital. Xylitol is not listed. I have no idea how many pieces were left in the package or how long ago she ate it, but it had to be Somewhere between 1pm and 4pm. Will she be ok since the ingredients didn't list xylitol? She is an 8 year old 98 pound rottweiler. She is acting normal with her insurmountable energy.

Oh no, that wasn't good that Kujo ate gum! Thank you for providing the ingredients information for the gum, that was extremely helpful. The good news is that maltitol and sorbital are not toxic to dogs. Because it does not contain xylitol, she should be fine. You may see some stomach upset from eating the gum in the form of vomiting and diarrhea, and I will give you a home remedy to give to her if you see this. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. I hope this helps :-)

Since xylitol isn't listed then Kujo should be fine because that is the only sweetener of concern that is found in gum. The other listed ingredients are also not listed as being toxic in dogs. She got really lucky because the regular Orbit gum definitely has xylitol in it. Just keep an eye on her to make sure everything's ok and feel free to consult with Pet Poison helpline for confirmation because they are the toxicology experts. At the most however she may have just an upset stomach (diarrhea and possible vomiting), which a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice should help with. If the gum isn't sugar free, then there is no concern about xylitol toxicity. Xylitol is used to replace sugar. I would check the ingredients of the gum just to be safe, but Eevee should be fine :-)

My dog ate Trident gum. Is xylitol toxic? Is it an emergency for dogs?

Many types of Trident gum contain xylitol. This artificial sweetener is extremely toxic to dogs because it very quickly causes hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) and liver damage. At this point, you should take Gidget to an emergency veterinarian immediately. They may or may not induce vomiting since it's been over an hour since she ingested the gum. They will also be able to closely monitor her blood glucose and liver values, while administering supportive IV fluids and medications. There are no home remedies for this situation - this is a life-threatening emergency if the gum contained xylitol. I really hope that everything goes well for Gidget!

My dog ate Extra gum. Is it life-threatening? What should I do?

Yes this could be life threatening if the Extra was sugar free and contains xylitol. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and is fatal without treatment. Because I'm not sure if the Extra Oliver ate contain xylitol, and if you aren't sure either, the best thing to do is rush him into the vet immediately. The vet can treat him for xylitol toxicity if the gum contained it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

My 10 lb dog ate gum with sorbitol. Should I be worried about him?

Sorbitol is essentially safe and unlikely to cause your pet significant illness; it may, however, cause minor to moderate stomach upset. While these symptoms typically subside quickly and without treatment, contact your veterinarian if they persist for more than 24 hours. We cannot diagnose over the internet so it is always best for you to call your local vet and take Acorn in for an exam based on their recommendation. Can my diabetic dog eat sugar-free cookies with maltitol safely?

Maltitol is not toxic to dogs like some other artificial sweeteners (such as xylitol), but it can sometimes cause GI upset or diarrhea in some dogs. So if possible, it would be better to use a treat that doesn't contain any artificial sweeteners at all. Many dogs enjoy cooked carrots or green beans, or small pieces of chicken or roast beef as treats. If you do opt to give Pepper the cookies, I would limit it to a small amount very occasionally to minimize the risk of upsetting her stomach.

Reggie should be ok. I've looked over the ingredients list myself, and I also cannot find xylitol on the ingredients list. More than likely, you will see some stomach upset in Reggie, such as vomiting or diarrhea. If you do see that, withhold food and feed a bland diet. My puppy swallowed hard candy. Should I be worried about xylitol?

It is likely this hard candy will be broken down in her stomach by the stomach acid, but the sugar from it may give her a tummy ache. I would check the ingredients of the hard candy to make sure there is no xylitol in it. That's because xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, and if it does have that ingredient, she will need to see a vet immediately. Xylitol ingestion can be fatal. Otherwise, she should be fine aside from the chance of GI upset in the form of vomiting and/or diarrhea.
