Will my dog be okay after eating liver cooked in an onion pan?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pekingese | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

My dad cooked liver for my dog as a treat but he used the same pan that he used to cook onion before that. He scraped all the onion off before cooking the liver but didn't wash the pan. My dog is a pekegese, 8 years old and about 15 to 18 pounds. He did not eat any onion or seasoning but he ate the liver that was cooked using the same pan as the onion but they weren't cooked at the same time. Will he be ok? I'm very worried.

Your dog will be ok. Your dog would need to eat about 1/8th of a cup of onions in order to be poisoned. It was good that your dad scraped off all the onion. You do not have to worry about onion poisoning in your dog if the liver was cooked in the same pan as you describe.
