My dog ate grass with pesticides. What signs mean an ER trip?

Signs of potential toxicity in pets can include drooling, shaking, tremors, seizure, coma, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, changes to the pupils and more. Contact issues with pesticides can include issues such as redness, itching, or swelling at the site of contact. If you suspect Emma may have come into contact with these materials, you can use a washcloth or pet wipe to gently wipe down her paws and belly to remove any possible contact on them. If you suspect toxicity or see symptoms of illness, seeking veterinary care is best.

If your dog eats some grass that had fertilizer applied to it, it rarely leads to serious poisoning; that said, more serious signs can be seen when the product is directly ingested (i.e., right out of the bag). If ingested directly from the bag, the results can include tremors and seizures. The most important thing is to make sure it’s not a fertilizer that has more dangerous products in it – some may contain iron, which can result in iron poisoning, and less common types may contain very dangerous insecticides such as carbamates or organophosphates. Thankfully, the EPA has limited the availability of these latter, more dangerous types of products. Carbamates and organophosphates can result in more serious, life-threatening clinical signs such as, drooling, vomiting, severe lethargy/collapse, diarrhea, excessive tearing, urination, abnormal heart rates, difficulty breathing (due to bronchoconstriction), tremors, seizures and death. If you suspect that your dog may have been exposed to something poisonous, contact your veterinarian or emergency veterinarian immediately. When in doubt, call ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. They may be able to instruct you on how to induce vomiting and whether or not there is a poisoning risk.

I'm very sorry to hear that Peanut isn't feeling good. Unfortunately with the symptoms you have described, especially the lethargy and diarrhea, I am very concerned about what he may have eaten. Any number of plants etc can potentially be poisonous, including mushrooms. I would check your yard (or wherever you weee with Peanut when all this started) for mushrooms or any other types of plants. Look also for indications of any other items-has something been spilled or sprayed on the grass? Are there other pieces of whatever Peanut may have eaten lying around? I know you mentioned financial concerns, unfortunately with the symptoms you describe I feel the best thing is for Peanut to go see a veterinarian. Given such a rapid decline through the day today I am very concerned about how Peanut will progress from here. If you simply cannot make it to the ER then monitor Peanut closely overnight, try and tempt him to eat and drink, and make sure to take him outside frequently to relieve himself. Schedule an appointment with your regular veterinarian first thing in the morning. I hope Peanut's condition improves for you!

Vomiting, diarrhea, increased salivation, tremors, seizures, twitching are the most common signs if an animal eats a pesticide. Most pesticides sprayed on the lawn are not the cause of most cases of vomiting and diarrhea though they tend to always get blamed. If Bella drank from the bottle or ate a lot of the plant with the chemical then the her signs could be from the weed killer. I am glad she is better and if she is eating, drinking and acting fine hopefully all is good now! I hope this helps!

This is an emergency. If you suspect a pesticide you should call the pet poison control helpline. Otherwise, when I see older animals present this way through the ER I am very worried about abdominal bleeding from a tumor. I would not wait. He should be see by a vet ASAP.

Hi. I would definitely call the pet poison holine to do a consultation about this ingredient they can then let you know if he needs to be seen and what will need to be done. I would contact them asap. Google pet poison hotline. Have your ingredients/bag with you.

Bloody vomitus is concerning. It can indicate a gastric ulcer or a very inflamed stomach wall. Since she has just had the one episode you can keep an eye on her for now. However, if the bloody vomit continues (like more than 3 times tonight), then I would recommend taking her to the ER. Do not feed her any more tonight and let her have small amounts of water if she can keep it down. If she is not back to herself in the next 24 hours then I would recommend taking her in to your regular vet tomorrow to be checked out.
