My dog ate grapevines, stems, or leaves. Is it an emergency?

  Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question! If grapevines are ingested in large quantities, they may cause GI upset such as vomiting and diarrhea. If he only chewed on it, then he should be ok, especially if he didn't eat any grapes. You did the right thing by checking, and it's fine to consult with your vet in the morning just to be safe.   Grape stems, like the grapes themselves, can cause kidney failure in some dogs while others are unaffected. The actual mechanism of toxicity is unknown. With aggressive treatment some dogs will recover normal kidney function, some dogs will develop kidney disease and occasionally some dogs will develop fatal kidney failure. If your dog ate stems you should see a vet - depending on when they were ingested they could start decontamination and IV fluids to protect the kidneys, or if it happened a few days ago they can check the kidney values and determine whether or not there was any damage.

  There is no known safe amount of grapes for dogs to eat. There is always a possibility of kidney failure. The (major) problem with treating these guys is that you don't know if it's going to cause kidney failure until it's too late. They don't act different or ill until they are life threateningly ill. The only way to treat them is to go to the clinic, make Benji vomit if it was within an hour or maybe 2, then keep him on IV fluids for a day or two. And some dogs can eat grapes without any problems. We just don't know how each individual will react. So I know that's not the most helpful answer, but that's the more accurate one we have. You can chance it and do nothing and there is a good chance everything will be fine, or you can take him to the clinic immediately for hospitalization. Good luck!

  Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Nash. Poor boy! Grapes are extremely toxic to dogs and cause kidney failure. If you think he's eaten grapes and he's been vomiting large amount for 3-4 days, he could be kidney failure. This is a medical emergency that cannot be treated with a home remedy. If he is in kidney failure, this will kill him without treatment. You must take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

  Hi! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Grapes can be very toxic to dogs. It really depends on how many were eaten though some dogs, especially small dogs, can have a toxicity with a small amount of grapes. If this happened within the last hour, your veterinarian could still induce vomiting on Cooper to see if you can retrieve the ingested grapes.
  
  Grapes can result in kidney failure and this toxicity is very serious. Usually, affected dogs are hospitalized for treatment and very carefully monitored. I recommend you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!
