My puppy ate a grape yesterday and is lethargic. Is it kidney failure?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 30 days old | 7 lbs

Hello my puppy is 4 months old and weighs 10 lbs. and he's been very lethargic all day today. This is not like him at all. Normally he barks and bites and yelps and is very hyperactive. It's possible he may have ingested a grape yesterday before I could get them away from him and I'm wondering if I still need to worry since it was a day ago n he didn't seem sick til this morning? What are the warning signs I need to watch for to know if he has kidney trouble?

I would be more worried about him having a viral infection such as parvo, especially if he has not had the full course of vaccinations. It would likely take several days before you would see signs of kidney failure caused by the grape ingestion. I do suggest you take him to a veterinarian ASAP as both parvo and kidney disease are life threatening conditions.
