My dog ate Gentizol ear infection medicine. Will she be okay?

She will likely be ok, however she could get diarrhea since the penicillin in this 10-fold overdose likely killed every single bacterium in your dog including the good bacteria in the digestive system. Depending on whether this was a long-acting or short acting penicillin you should wait a few days and add some probiotics to her food to help reestablish a healthy intestinal flora.

Hello. Yes, it is most likely that the gentamicin has induced the deafness in your dog. Most times this is reversible, but in some cases the deafness is permanent. I would not use any more gentamycin. Most ear infections are due to underlying allergies, so the first thing to do is have a culture done to see if antibiotics are even warranted ( may have to wait at least several days after stopping medications to obtain the culture ). I would also start a low dose with a decreasing dosage of steroids to decrease inflammation in the ears & start an anti-allergy medication such as Apoquel or Cytopoint to see if the ears can be kept at least more comfortable without the use of topical ear medications. That's ok, this happens. Lina should be fine; at most, you may see some stomach upset but this won't cause any serious problems. Just be sure to give it to her once a day from now on. I hope this helps!

Hello, and thanks for your question. Yes, the gentamicin can cause deafness if this medication is used in an ear with a compromised or ruptured ear drum. This is why it's important to see the vet and have them examine the ears prior to starting this (or any) medication. I wouldn't be too worried, however. Yes, deafness is one of the known risks with this medication - but this is a medication we use a LOT in private practice, and the risk of it causing deafness is extraordinarily low. I have never had it happen to any of my patients! If your vet recommended this as the best medication for Briley's ear infection, I would have no hesitation to go ahead and use it. Hope this helps!

Do not worry, nothing bad will happen, basically what it states is that she needs at least 4 drops for it to be effective, putting in more will not harm her but the bottle might finish sooner than expected because of that.

At the high end of the dose of 60mg/kg for systemic infections, it would be approximately 436mg every 8 hours for that dose for a 16lb dog. A 500mg capsule will not likely cause any life threatening problems. You may see vomiting and diarrhea but this should resolve on its own. The most important aspect of treating an ear infection is applying the appropriate medication (determined based on ear cytology, or looking at a sample of ear discharge on a microscope slide) directly into the ear canal as a topical treatment to the infection. Sometimes, particularly if the eardrum is ruptured, a dog may be put on an oral course of antibiotics and/or antifungals (depending on the type of infection), but penicillin would not be a usual antibiotic choice as it is unlikely to address the more common causes of ear infections. Therefore, injectable penicillin is not a typical component of treating an ear infection. I recommend you have Aerial seen by your primary veterinarian, and they can help guide you on an appropriate treatment of the infection; injectable antibiotics should never be used without the guidance of a veterinarian.
