My dog ate a dead bird and too much peroxide. Is he okay?

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for dogs to eat dead animals found in the yard or on walks. Thankfully, in most cases the worst that may occur is some stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea). Monitor for GI upset ([vomiting](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/vomiting-1/) and/or [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/)), lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. If your dog is behaving normally otherwise, you can [manage minor GI upset at home](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-things-you-can-do-at-home-if-your-pet-has-diarrhea) by first withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte during this fasting period. Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain cooked white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no vomiting. Continue feeding bland until there is no vomiting for 48 hours and/or the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. If the vomiting or diarrhea don't stop or if you see other symptoms (lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, etc.), see your veterinarian.

Vinnie is such a cutie! Eating a dead bird can make him sick, but dogs eat really gross things all the time like poop and are fine. Just keep an eye on him. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, or lethargy, have him seen by a vet. Best of luck.

Hello. Asta should be just fine, although she might throw the bird up. There is a chance of stomach upset if the bird was already dead, so if anytime in the next few days Asta starts vomiting, develops diarrhea, stops eating or just seem to feel unwell, please contact your veterinarian for recommended treatment. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Bruno. He really needs to be evaluated by a vet in your area to get to the bottom of this. The longer he goes without eating the weaker he will become and he will continue to refuse food. If you cannot get him turned around soon, you will be forced to get him to a vet. In the meantime, I would puree (in a blender) some canned dog food and water. You could even buy some canned baby food (meat flavors and dilute with water). Get a large dosing syringe from someone and start force feeding him very small volumes at first to see if he can hold a small amount of food down. 5-10 milliliter increments or 1-2 teaspoons. If he holds that down for an hour repeat the same process. If all goes well, you could start increasing the amount being fed until hopefully he starts eating on his own. I'm sure consuming the bird has caused this and I'm actually surprised that he is not sicker after about 4 days. Keep giving pedialyte/fluids also in between feedings if he can hold everything down. The good thing is that dogs are actually well-equipped to handle rotting flesh and other unclean food sources. It's not uncommon for a dog to be attracted to these sorts of things and eat them. Luckily, there is very little diseases that can be passed from a bird to a dog and if there were worms, or maggots (more likely) they wouldn't be expected to cause an infestation in Russel. At this time, there is really nothing that needs to be done and he will likely be just fine. It's possible that this could cause an upset stomach or infection which will lead to vomiting and diarrhea. If you happen to notice this or any other signs of illness with Russell, then you should take him to the vet. I'm glad that your vet recommended that Charlie vomit up the grape that he'd eaten. The biggest challenge with grape ingestion is that there is no known "safe" amount. With this type of potential toxicity, some dogs can experience acute kidney failure after eating just one grape, while others can be perfectly fine after eating a bunch. As far as using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting, some studies have shown that there can be considerable damage and irritation to the esophagus and stomach due to hydrogen peroxide. Generally, I do not recommend using it for this reason. I understand that it's really challenging to measure and force-feed this substance, so it's really easy to give a little extra. Since Charlie has not stopped vomiting and is acting normally, odds are very good that he'll be absolutely fine. Just keep a close eye on him for changes in his overall demeanor, appetite, vomiting, hard swallowing (gulping not associated with eating or drinking), or any other concerns. If problems arise, be sure to take him to your vet, but again, odds are very much in your favor. I hope that everything goes well!

He may not be eating due to dietary indiscretion from eating the bird or mouse or it could even be due to a gastrointestinal obstruction. I am afraid that if he is not drinking water he may be becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and most importantly start him on medications to make him feel better.
