My dog ate chocolate covered coffee beans. What should I do?

Hello, if you're unsure about the ingestion of the coffee beans, if would be safest to have your veterinarian induce vomiting and monitor bb for any side effects from the chocolate or caffeine. This is most successful when induced within an hour of ingestion. Monitor for any lethargy, pacing, anxiety, rapid heart rate, weakness or collapse and have bb evaluated immediately if you note any of these. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Oh dear! You're right that cocoa powder can certainly be toxic to dogs; coffee can as well, since they don't tolerate caffeine very well. But the good news is, I would not expect a single prepackaged coffee drink like this to contain enough of either one to cause any serious toxicity issues in a large-breed dog. It's possible that he may have some mild stomach upset if he isn't used to eating things like this, but otherwise I would not expect to see any serious problems. To be safe, it would be best to monitor him for the next 12 hours for any signs of toxicity - which would include repeated episodes of vomiting or diarrhea, restlessness or hyperactivity, muscle tremors, or even seizures. If you see anything that concerns you, you can always take him to the vet to be checked.

I wouldn’t be concerned about 2 coffee beans in a medium sized dog. She may be a little hyperactive for a few hours, but I don’t think there will be any other effects. I would not continue to induce vomiting.

If it is milk chocolate, MOST LIKELY it will not cause any major symptoms of chocolate toxicity. However, espresso can be quite strong for a little dog, like Mochi, and could potential be toxic. Signs of caffeine toxicity MAY occur and would be similar to chocolate toxicity. I would not recommend to induce vomiting at this time based on the information you have given. However, the quantity of these products seems like a very small amount I think it is most like to not be a problem. The first signs you would be looking for are vomiting, diarrhea, agitation and/or hyper excitability. If any of these have already started or you see them within the next couple of hours I would recommend to either call the ASPCA number to speak directly to a toxicologist: 888-299-2973 There is a fee to speak to a veterinary toxicologist, however it will be worth it if you need it! or call your local emergency clinic and speak with a veterinary technician about Mochi's symptoms.

According to my chocolate toxicity calculator this is a safe amount and your dog should not have an ill effect. If you can determine the type of chocolate (white, milk, dark, etc.) and the exact amount (number of ounces or grams), then you can call your local 24 hour clinic and ask if that amount is toxic or not. If it is, then you will need to get Vito to throw up, and then depending on what is thrown up and how much chocolate was ingested, IV fluids, and medications, might be required. Chocolate toxicity causes vomiting, diarrhea, tachycardia (high heart rate), arrythmias (Abnormal heart beat rhythm), tremors, seizures and death, often in that order, depending on how much was eaten. In order to know if Barney is in any danger we need know how much chocolate he ate, what kind (dark, milk, bakers?), and how long ago. Based on his picture, Barney is a very small dog, so if he ate more than 1.5oz of milk chocolate (and any amount of a darker chocolate) he needs to go to the vet to vomit. Give them your regular vet a call right away and see if he can go straight there or if they recommend he go to an emergency clinic. Good luck!
