My Labrador ate chocolate brownies and has diarrhea. Is he okay?

If this was a milk chocolate mix then he should only end up with mild to moderate symptoms: - GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite) - Increase thirst and urination - Tachycardia (fast heart rate) and hyperexcitability, high blood pressure - Neurological signs If this was dark chocolate, bakers chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, then he ate a toxic dose and should go to the ER as soon as possible! I suggest you do the following if decide not to go to the ER now: 1. If he will eat it, give him one or two slices of plain bread now. Sometimes that helps with the diarrhea and will slow down the GI tract. 2. Then, no food for 6-8 hours. Water should be available at all times. 3. If no vomiting after 6-8 hours, then start feeding small amounts of a bland diet every few hours. Bland foods like: scrambled eggs, plain rice, plain pasta, boiled chicken or turkey, human baby foods (meat flavors). No butter, oil or spices on the food. 4. Poor Brady! Fortunately, he's a pretty big dog, so a small amount of milk chocolate is unlikely to cause more harm than the stomach upset that he's currently experiencing. However, if the chocolate in your trash can was baker's chocolate, cocoa powder, or other dark chocolates, it could be a bit more problematic. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, which can cause heart and/or neurologic issues. If Brady consumed any of these forms of dark chocolate, I recommend calling the ASPCA animal poison control line (888-426-4435) to determine if the amount he ingested is enough to cause toxicity. It's possible that Brady's watery diarrhea is due to stomach upset from ingestion of the chocolate, as well as anything else in the trash can. I agree that if the diarrhea continues for more than a day, or if he also starts to vomit, refuses to eat or drink, or becomes lethargic, that you should take him to his veterinarian for treatment. I am assuming it was milk chocolate frosting - if so you might see vomiting and diarrhea, and it would be best to see a veterinarian to induce vomiting if it happened in the past couple of hours. If it has been longer you can probably monitor for any vomiting and diarrhea and see a veterinarian if they occur.

I doubt the number of chocolate chips in 1-2 chocolate chip cookies would be enough to cause chocolate toxicity, however any rich food can potentially trigger vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. If he seems otherwise fine you can monitor him during the day: I would only allow him to drink small amounts of water at a time and would not recommend feeding until this evening. If you see symptoms such as tremors, seizures, or repeated episodes of vomiting, then this would be an emergency and there would be no other option except getting her to a vet immediately.
