My dog ate chocolate and gummies. He's lethargic. ER vet needed?

Hi, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gretchen!! I highly recommend you take Gretchen to your Vet ASAP or an emergency hospital now. Some candy contains xylitol which is highly toxic to dogs. It causes low blood sugar and liver failure. Another possibility is a stomach or intestinal obstruction (the wrappers are stuck and need to be surgically removed) or pancreatitis secondary to the candy. After the Vet does an exam they will want to run full blood work and possibly belly X-rays. I hope this helps and I wish Gretchen the best!

Hello, sorry to hear about Toe Toe. Unfortunately chocolate toxicity tends to cause GI signs that are normally transient. However in high quantities they may also cause pancreatitis which may cause more severe, long term signs. If her signs are not resolved 4 days after her ingestion, then she will most likely need medications to treat her signs fully. Most concerning however is gum ingestion and the presence of xylitol in that gum. This may cause a severe decrease in her blood sugar and occasionally liver disease which may also present itself with GI signs and lethargy. Unfortunately, Toe Toe is going to need to be see by a veterinarian. There are multiple options out there to help you bring her to the veterinarian. Some may include funding from rescue groups, applying for care credit, and contacting friends and family. I hope you are able to bring Toe Toe to a veterinarian. In the interim, make sure she has plenty of water available and offer a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken and low fat cottage cheese. Well, the good news is that he doesn't appear to be showing signs of toxicity. The ability for the cake to be toxic depends on the size of the cocoa content of the cake. If it's a relatively light chocolate cake, then this would not be enough to cause toxicity. If it was an unusually dark chocolatey cake, then this could be a concern. In order for you to determine the potential for toxicity, I recommend you find out the amount of cocoa powder used in the cake (may estate based on a recipe online) and use the chocolate toxicity calculator at this link: http://veterinaryclinic.com/chocolate/calc.html Signs of chocolate toxicity can be vomiting, hyper-excitability, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take Jasper to a vet for treatment/monitoring. I understand money is a concern, but in this case it would be life-threatening, so I would see about borrowing money, or using credit. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure he has plenty of water and that you check him every four hours for any signs of toxicity. It's best to take her to the vet considering the amount of chocolate ingested is unknown and she was vomiting (an early sign of chocolate toxicity). It's also concerning that she ate the wrappers, because these can cause problems in the intestines as well. These gums can potentially cause gastrointestinal upset and, if xylitol is inside, can cause profound hypoglycemia and liver toxicity. Gastrointestinal obstruction are possible as well. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately.

In order to know if Barney is in any danger we need know how much chocolate he ate, what kind (dark, milk, bakers?), and how long ago. Based on his picture, Barney is a very small dog, so if he ate more than 1.5oz of milk chocolate (and any amount of a darker chocolate) he needs to go to the vet to vomit. Give them your regular vet a call right away and see if he can go straight there or if they recommend he go to an emergency clinic. Good luck!

If you see symptoms such as tremors, seizures, or repeated episodes of vomiting, then this would be an emergency and there would be no other option except getting her to a vet immediately.
