My dog ate cake and vomited. Is it chocolate poisoning or pancreatitis?

Yes. Unfortunately cookie dough is not good for dogs. He could have pancreatitis but he could also have salmonella. If the dough had chocolate chips those can also be toxic to dogs. You need to get him back to the vet for treatment - both pancreatitis and salmonella can be deadly if left untreated. Pancreatitis can also cause permanent damage to the pancreas making this a lifelong condition. I highly recommend you not feed him anything but food made for dogs in the future. Best wishes.

If there was chocolate in it a check up would be needed otherwise I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Chances are the cup will pass without problem, but if you do see any vomiting or diarrhea from the cake, you can try a home remedy for her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, diarrhea continues on the bland diet, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. You can try to calculate the exact amount of chocolate in the donut and call your local emergency clinic and they can tell you over the phone if the amount is toxic or not, but it is unlikely to be. Otherwise watch for vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, hyperactivity. If these occur get her to a vet right away. These are unlikely to occur however. Best of luck with Pixie!

I’m so sorry to hear about Zeke! I worry less about the chocolate content and more about the butter content triggering some pancreatitis. I expect Zeke will have some vomiting and diarrhea. If the vomiting occurs more than 3 or 4 times or for longer than 8 hours, or if Zeke is not wanting to eat by dinner time tomorrow, it’s time to see the vet. The diarrhea may last for 1-3 days but if it’s profuse or lasts more than 3 days (or worsens with time instead of improving), it’s also time to see the vet. In terms of feeding: I would not feed anything right now and if vomitjng starts, pull food and water. I am sure that Adele is regretting her decision right now! Vanilla cake contains a lot of sugar, which would easily cause an upset stomach. I would recommend that you not feed any more food for tonight, but leave water out. If she starts vomiting and it lasts longer than 8-12 hours, or if she becomes profoundly lethargic, she may need to be evaluated by an emergency veterinarian for pain medications, nausea medications, and sometimes even hospitalization if she is diagnosed with pancreatitis (which mini schnauzers are prone to getting). If she does ok overnight, then only give her half of her normal breakfast and continue watching for signs of nausea or pain.
