My dog ate brown sugar and plastic. Should I take her to the vet?

Ingestion of large amount of sugar may produce vomiting and transient diarrhea but Kahlua should not develop any more serious symptoms. Please, offer your puppy small amounts of water every 30-60 minutes and monitor her closely at home. If she does develop diarrhea and profuse vomiting, you may have to take her to your local vets to get symptomatic treatment.

It's difficult to know how much the actual cocoa content is in this, but brownies tend to be more concentrated with cocoa powder, which is concerning for chocolate toxicity. It also depends on the size of the brownies. In order for you to determine the potential for toxicity, I recommend you estimate the amount of cocoa powder potentially ingested and use the chocolate toxicity calculator at this link: http://veterinaryclinic.com/chocolate/calc.html Signs of chocolate toxicity can be vomiting, hyper-excitability, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take her to a vet for treatment/monitoring as soon as possible. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure she has plenty of water and that you check her every four hours for any signs of toxicity. If she is better within 12 hours, then I would not worry about any signs of toxicity. If this happened recently, ie within the past 2 hours or so, you should take him to a vet for inducing vomiting. If this has been longer then you need to watch your dog for a tummy ache, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, as he could get pancreatitis from the food he is not used to. Also the wrappers could cause trouble. Watch his feces, wrappers should show up as they pass through the intestinal canal. If he shows any signs of discomfort, please take him to a veterinarian or Pet ER.

Apparently Kurt had his own plans for New Years! None of the oils are toxic to dogs (unless there is something that is not listed in the Fragrance Oils), but if he ate 8 ounces of it, that is a lot of oils and he certainly could have some diarrhea from it. If the diarrhea is mild, you could just add some cooked white rice to his food to help it resolve. If it is worse, you could feed him 1/2 cooked white rice and 1/2 cooked white meat chicken (no skin or bones) until the diarrhea has resolved. If the diarrhea is severe, has blood in it, Kurt is lethargic or the diarrhea continues for more than a few days, I would see your veterinarian. Good luck! Hopefully he will be fine. If this was a milk chocolate mix then he should only end up with mild to moderate symptoms: - GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite) - Increase thirst and urination - Tachycardia (fast heart rate) and hyperexcitability, high blood pressure - Neurological signs If this was dark chocolate, bakers chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, then he ate a toxic dose and should go to the ER as soon as possible! I suggest you do the following if decide not to go to the ER now: 1. If he will eat it, give him one or two slices of plain bread now. Sometimes that helps with the diarrhea and will slow down the GI tract. 2. Then, no food for 6-8 hours. Water should be available at all times. 3. If no vomiting after 6-8 hours, then start feeding small amounts of a bland diet every few hours. Bland foods like: scrambled eggs, plain rice, plain pasta, boiled chicken or turkey, human baby foods (meat flavors). No butter, oil or spices on the food. 4. If vomiting starts at any time or he becomes VERY restless then you should get him to the ER for an exam as soon as possible. I hope this is helpful! Best wishes.

Monitor for gastrointestinal upset (vomiting and/or diarrhea). You may want to withhold food for the next 24 hours, allowing small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. If Louis develops GI upset, the fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts will typically resolve the issue. Transition slowly to his regular diet after symptoms abate. If they don't or if he develops lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain, have him examined by your veterinarian.

It is likely this hard candy will be broken down in her stomach by the stomach acid, but the sugar from it may give her a tummy ache. I would check the ingredients of the hard candy to make sure there is no xylitol in it. That's because xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, and if it does have that ingredient, she will need to see a vet immediately. Xylitol ingestion can be fatal. Otherwise, she should be fine aside from the chance of GI upset in the form of vomiting and/or diarrhea. Should you see that, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.
